Africa-Press. <\/strong> <\/span>Kenya is facing a wave of heavy rains affecting various regions of the country, resulting in human losses and significant damage to infrastructure, amid official warnings of continued risks in the coming days.<\/p>\n

These developments come as authorities intensify efforts to contain the crisis’s aftermath and provide support to the most affected areas.<\/p>\n

The usual rainy season in Kenya runs from March to May, but authorities state that the heavy rainfall and soil saturation have increased the risk of floods and landslides.<\/p>\n

The Kenyan National Police Service reported that the number of victims from the heavy rains has reached 10 so far, with the initial toll likely to rise as search and rescue operations continue.<\/p>\n

The highest number of fatalities has been recorded in the eastern region, where 7 people died due to floods and landslides.<\/p>\n

The continuous rains have caused severe damage to infrastructure, disrupting transportation and making it difficult to access many areas.<\/p>\n

According to official data, two main bridges have been damaged: the Mwina Bridge in Kwale County within the coastal region and the Ngumini Bridge in Kitui County in the eastern region.<\/p>\n

The damage to these bridges has cut off vital routes that were used to connect villages and remote areas to urban centers, complicating relief operations and hindering humanitarian aid access to those affected.<\/p>\n

A landslide was also recorded in the Tambach sub-county of Elgeyo Marakwet, raising growing concerns about the safety of residents, especially with continued rainfall and increasing chances of further landslides.<\/p>\n

In response to these developments, Kenyan authorities have deployed multi-agency emergency teams to the affected areas, where they are intensively conducting rescue and evacuation operations, in addition to providing urgent humanitarian support.<\/p>\n

The National Police Service confirmed that response teams are on the ground, assisting affected communities and restoring access to essential services, including reopening damaged roads and repairing critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Coordination among various government entities is ongoing to ensure an effective and swift response, given the challenges posed by the geographical nature of some affected areas, which sometimes hinder rescue teams’ access.<\/p>\n

In a related context, the Kenyan Red Cross reported that following heavy rainfall, water levels have risen on the Mombasa Road (the eastern bypass), leading to flooding.<\/p>\n

In the Mukuru Kwa Njenga area, unconfirmed reports have emerged of missing persons and families stranded due to water, prompting Red Cross teams in Nairobi to assess the situation and potential response.<\/p>\n

Sudden floods were also reported near “T Mall” on Lang’ata Road, where a vehicle was trapped in a hole with passengers inside, before rescue teams successfully evacuated everyone.<\/p>\n

In Kajiado County, flooding from the swollen Kandisi River on Magadi Road trapped three people inside a truck, who were later rescued.<\/p>\n

Sudden floods have also been reported in the Moyale area of Marsabit County.<\/p>\n

The Kenyan Red Cross confirmed that it remains on standby for additional search and rescue operations in the coming period.<\/p>\n

As heavy rains continue, authorities have issued repeated warnings to residents, especially in flood and landslide-prone areas.<\/p>\n

Citizens are urged to exercise caution and avoid approaching rivers and low-lying areas that may experience sudden water flows.<\/p>\n

They emphasized the importance of not attempting to cross damaged roads or bridges and fully adhering to local authorities’ instructions to ensure their safety.<\/p>\n

The Kenya Meteorological Department continues to monitor the weather situation, issuing regular updates on rainfall patterns and weather forecasts to enable citizens and relevant entities to take necessary precautionary measures.<\/p>\n

It is noted that 25 people were killed after roads were submerged in the Kenyan capital Nairobi following heavy rains in March.<\/p>\n

Additionally, landslides in western Kenya due to heavy rains last November resulted in 26 fatalities.<\/p>\n
