Ethiopia responded by accusing the Sudanese armed forces of supporting armed groups in the Tigray region and facilitating their incursion across the border, while Khartoum indicated that it is prepared to retaliate and engage in open confrontation “if necessary.”

What Happened?

On Monday, the Sudanese government announced that a site in the vicinity of Khartoum Airport was targeted by a drone without any reported casualties, before later announcing the resumption of air traffic. The Sudanese army also reported that it repelled a drone attack targeting several locations in the capital.

The attacks included drone strikes on Wadi Sidna base in Omdurman, according to a Sudanese military source, while one of the shells fell in a residential area near the airport.

Prepared for War if Necessary

In a recent statement, Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieddin Saleh accused Ethiopia of participating in the aggression against Sudan, threatening that his country is ready to respond and enter into direct confrontation “if necessary.”

Saleh stated in a press conference, “If the situation requires entering into an open confrontation that they want, we, our army, and our people are ready for that, because the dignity of the Sudanese people is more precious than anything.”

Following the announced attacks, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry accused Addis Ababa of being involved in the bombing of Khartoum Airport with drones and summoned its ambassador to Ethiopia, Al-Zain Ibrahim, for consultations.

Regarding this, the Sudanese minister later indicated that summoning the ambassador is considered a “normal diplomatic action,” adding, “But we have all the international and regional organizations to which we belong.”

According to a Sudanese news agency, the government officially announced the involvement of the UAE and Ethiopia in the bombing of the airport, affirming Sudan’s right to respond to the aggression.

The foreign minister emphasized that the airport is a civilian facility protected under international law, and targeting it constitutes a clear violation.

He added that “conclusive evidence proves that the attack originated from within Ethiopian territory,” considering this “hostile behavior from a country that should be a sister.” He revealed that two official letters were sent to both Ethiopia and the UAE regarding the accusations.

Documented Evidence

In this context, the Sudanese armed forces announced that they possess documented evidence of Ethiopia and the UAE’s involvement in the attack.

The official spokesman for the army, Brigadier General Asim Awad Abdel Wahab, stated that drones launched from Bahir Dar Airport in Ethiopia carried out “hostile” sorties within Sudanese airspace, targeting military and civilian sites, including Khartoum International Airport. The UAE had previously denied any involvement in Sudanese affairs.

How Did Ethiopia Respond?

Ethiopia quickly announced its firm rejection of Sudan’s accusations regarding the targeting of Khartoum Airport, asserting that they “have no basis in truth.”

The Ethiopian Foreign Ministry, in a statement denying responsibility, indicated that the Addis Ababa government exercised restraint and refrained from publicizing the serious violations that its territorial integrity and national security faced from certain parties involved in the Sudanese conflict (unnamed).

Ethiopia, in turn, accused the Sudanese armed forces of arming and financing mercenaries from the Tigray Front, against whom it fought a bloody war in the north of the country between 2020 and 2022, facilitating their incursion along Ethiopia’s western border.

The Foreign Ministry confirmed that it possesses evidence proving that Sudan has become what it described as “a center for hostile forces against it,” considering the recent accusations from Sudanese officials as being executed at the behest of unnamed external parties seeking to achieve their dubious agendas in destabilizing the region.

The ministry emphasized solidarity with the Sudanese people, affirming that they share with the Ethiopian people deep-rooted historical ties of friendship, and renewed its call for dialogue among the parties involved in the Sudanese conflict, as there is no military solution to the crisis.

Previous Accusations

In March, the Sudanese government condemned drone attacks for the first time, claiming they originated from Ethiopia, which Addis Ababa denied at the time.

A report released by a research unit at Yale University in April indicated that an Ethiopian military base near the Sudanese border was providing support to the Rapid Support Forces, based on satellite imagery analysis taken between December 2025 and March 2026.

Today, the spokesman for the Sudanese army revealed that air defenses shot down one of the drones on March 17, and after analyzing its data, it was found to be “owned by the UAE and used from within Ethiopian territory.”

Khartoum accuses the UAE of supplying the Rapid Support Forces with money and weapons, accusations that Abu Dhabi has repeatedly denied.

The attacks on Monday in Khartoum came days after drone strikes attributed to the Rapid Support Forces in southern Khartoum, one of which resulted in the deaths of five people.

In White Nile state, south of Khartoum, a government source reported that drones bombed an ethanol factory in the city of Kenana yesterday, causing significant damage.

In recent months, the frequency of drone attacks by the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has increased.

War in Sudan and Conflict in Ethiopia

Since April 2023, the Rapid Support Forces have been fighting the army over a dispute regarding the integration of the former into the military institution, leading to famine amid one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, with tens of thousands of Sudanese killed and around 13 million displaced.

Before the attacks on Monday, Khartoum had enjoyed relative calm since the army regained control in March, interspersed with a series of drone strikes at the end of last year targeting military sites and energy and water infrastructure facilities.

In recent months, the capital has seen a gradual return to life, with more than 1.8 million displaced persons returning and the resumption of domestic flights from the airport, despite ongoing electricity shortages and essential services in large parts of the city.

In Ethiopia, the Tigray region witnessed a war between the Front and federal forces supported by local militias and the Eritrean army from November 2020 to November 2022, resulting in the deaths of at least 600,000 people, according to estimates from the African Union.

Find more news and analyses on Africa on the Africa Press website

Africa-Press.
