noting that the exceptional measures include “imposing a curfew, detaining suspected individuals, and restricting the movement of people, vehicles, motorcycles, and speedboats.”

The announcement of the state of emergency followed two attacks claimed by elements linked to Boko Haram, targeting Chadian military sites in the Lake Chad area, resulting in at least 26 soldiers killed, according to authorities.

The most intense attacks occurred on Monday evening when armed men stormed the “Baraka Tolorom” military base located on one of the islands in the lake, leading to fierce clashes between the attackers and government forces.

The military confirmed that the attack resulted in the deaths of at least 23 soldiers and injuries to 26 others, before government forces managed to repel the attackers and initiate extensive search operations in the area.

According to the military statement, a neighboring village to the attack site suffered from burning and looting, while an accurate toll of civilian casualties has not yet been available, coinciding with the temporary suspension of activities by non-governmental organizations due to the deteriorating security situation in the region.

In another attack on Wednesday evening, the government announced additional military casualties in the Lake Basin, prompting authorities to declare a national mourning period of three days.

President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno pledged to continue the fight against armed groups, asserting that the country “will not back down in the face of terrorism.” Déby stated in a post on his official Facebook page regarding Monday’s attack: “We will continue to fight with unwavering determination until this threat is completely eradicated.”

In another post, he referred to the soldiers who fell in the attack as “heroes,” adding that “the country will remain steadfast and united, and darkness will never triumph over the republic.” He also visited the wounded returning to the capital N’Djamena, in an effort to boost the morale of the armed forces.

This escalation comes just months after the military announced in February 2025 that Boko Haram “no longer has any refuge within the country,” following a large-scale military operation personally launched by Déby after a bloody attack in October 2024 that resulted in the deaths of around forty soldiers.

The Lake region is considered one of the most security-vulnerable areas, as it serves as a junction for the borders of four countries: Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad, making it an open arena for the movements of armed groups and smuggling networks.

Since 2009, the area has become a major stronghold for Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa, as armed groups exploit the complex geographical nature of the lake and its scattered islands to carry out swift attacks against government forces and civilians.

In recent months, the activity of the “Group of the People of the Sunnah for Dawah and Jihad,” affiliated with Boko Haram, has increased, with a rise in kidnappings and attacks on military sites, indicating the group’s ability to reorganize despite ongoing military campaigns.

Observers believe that the recent attacks reflect the ongoing challenges faced by forces in securing the area, especially with the expansion of cross-border threats and the decline in logistical capabilities of some regional armies participating in the multinational joint force to combat terrorism in the Lake Basin.

In this context, the National Council for Islamic Affairs in the country condemned the attacks targeting the forces, affirming its full support for the authorities and defense and security forces in confronting what it described as “terrorist attacks.”

The head of the council, Sheikh Abd al-Da’im Abdullah Osman, stated that the targeted soldiers “were vigilant in protecting the homeland and citizens,” offering condolences to President Déby, the families of the victims, and the people.

The council called on citizens to “stand united” and enhance national vigilance in the face of security threats, urging imams and preachers to intensify prayers and recitations of the Quran for the preservation of the country’s security and stability.

Find more news and analyses on Africa on the Africa Press website

Africa-Press.
