Africa-Press. <\/strong> <\/span>African health authorities have announced a new outbreak of the Ebola virus in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, prompting relevant parties to raise the regional alert level amid growing concerns about the potential spread of the virus to neighboring countries in a region experiencing armed conflicts and significant population movement related to mining activities.<\/p>\n

The African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, part of the African Union, stated that approximately 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths have been recorded so far, mostly in the mining areas of Mongwalu and Rwampara, located about 100 kilometers north of Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province in eastern DRC.<\/p>\n

The agency added that four deaths have been recorded among confirmed laboratory cases, while preliminary analyses conducted by the National Institute for Biomedical Research in Kinshasa detected the virus in 13 out of 20 samples tested.<\/p>\n

Health officials indicated that genetic sequencing of the virus is still ongoing, but initial indicators suggest that the current strain does not belong to the “Zaire” variant, which caused previous widespread outbreaks in the country.<\/p>\n

Additional suspected cases have also been reported in Bunia, a densely populated urban center near the borders with Uganda and South Sudan, raising the likelihood of regional transmission across borders.<\/p>\n

In response to the developments, the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention held an urgent meeting that included authorities from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring countries, along with international partners, to coordinate health monitoring efforts and contain the outbreak.<\/p>\n

The agency warned that the “high population movement” associated with mining activities and cross-border trade could accelerate the spread of the virus, particularly in border areas with limited health oversight.<\/p>\n

The Congolese government has not yet issued any official comment regarding the new outbreak.<\/p>\n

Ebola is one of the deadliest viral diseases, transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals or contaminated materials. Symptoms typically begin with fever, fatigue, and muscle pain, before progressing in some cases to vomiting, diarrhea, and internal bleeding.<\/p>\n

Infected individuals do not become contagious until symptoms appear, following an incubation period ranging from two to 21 days.<\/p>\n

The Ebola virus was first discovered in 1976 near the Ebola River in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with the first outbreaks recorded in remote villages in Central Africa near tropical rainforests.<\/p>\n

Ebola is a severe viral disease that is often fatal in humans, with the virus transmitted to humans from wild animals such as fruit bats, and then spreading among humans through direct contact with the blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids of infected individuals, as well as through surfaces and materials contaminated with these fluids.<\/p>\n

Symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, and severe cases may progress to bleeding and multiple organ failure, leading to death.<\/p>\n

The average fatality rate for Ebola is around 50%, but this rate has varied between 25% and 90% in previous outbreaks according to World Health Organization data.<\/p>\n

The current outbreak of Ebola in the Congo is the 17th since the disease emerged in the country in 1976, following the announcement of the end of the previous outbreak in December, which claimed 43 lives. The 2022 outbreak in the northeastern Equateur province resulted in six deaths.<\/p>\n

The outbreak that struck eastern Congo between 2018 and 2020 caused over a thousand deaths, marking the largest toll since the West Africa outbreak between 2014 and 2016 in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia, which exceeded 11,000 deaths.<\/p>\n

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has experienced several waves of outbreaks over the past decades, the most severe occurring between 2018 and 2020, when the disease claimed around 2,300 lives.<\/p>\n

The last previous outbreak, declared over in December 2025 in the central Kasai region, resulted in 64 infections and 45 deaths.<\/p>\n

Over the past five decades, Ebola has caused an estimated 50,000 deaths across various parts of the African continent, while health authorities currently face a new challenge in containing the latest outbreak and preventing it from escalating into a widespread regional crisis.<\/p>\n

The World Health Organization emphasizes that engaging local communities is a crucial factor for the success of any containment efforts, alongside providing clinical care, enhancing surveillance systems and laboratory services, implementing infection prevention and control measures in health facilities, ensuring safe and dignified burials, and using vaccines when possible, in addition to social mobilization campaigns.<\/p>\n
