Africa-Press. <\/strong> <\/span>The Nigerian Defense Command announced that Nigerian forces, in collaboration with a local source, killed 175 members of ISIS in a series of joint air and ground strikes conducted in the northeast of the country over the past few days.<\/p>\n

The military reported that operations carried out in cooperation with a local source destroyed checkpoints, weapon caches, logistical centers, and funding networks associated with ISIS in West Africa, which has been leading an ongoing insurgency in the region for years.<\/p>\n

Since suffering significant setbacks in the Middle East, ISIS has shifted its focus to Africa, which accounted for 86% of the organization’s global activity in the first three months of 2026, according to data from a conflict monitoring organization.<\/p>\n

The spokesperson for the Nigerian Ministry of Defense stated in a press release: “Estimates, as of May 19, indicate the elimination of 175 ISIS fighters on the battlefield.”<\/p>\n

The statement added that the strikes that resulted in the death of Abu Bilal al-Manki on May 16, described by both governments as the second-in-command of ISIS globally, were followed by further strikes over the past weekend that also resulted in the deaths of Abdul Wahab, one of the leaders of ISIS in West Africa responsible for attacks and propaganda, as well as Abu Musa al-Mangawi and Abu al-Muthanna al-Muhajir, a prominent media official close to al-Manki. The Defense Command confirmed that these operations are part of an ongoing campaign “to pursue and destroy” militants threatening Nigeria and the region.<\/p>\n

According to Dagvin Anderson, the leader of the local source, “Nigerians have played a crucial role over the past few months: they identified the target, helped us gather intelligence, and provided the necessary support to carry out this mission,” he stated in a speech before the U.S. Congress on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

For nearly six months, Washington and Abuja have strengthened their cooperation in combating terrorism through material support, as well as deploying between 100 and 200 U.S. soldiers in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

The United States conducted its first airstrikes in December 2025, targeting, according to the U.S., militants from a local group in Sokoto State, northwest of the country.<\/p>\n
