Africa-Press. <\/strong> <\/span>Military authorities in Burkina Faso have closed the Grand Mosque affiliated with the Sunni movement in the capital, Ouagadougou, “until further notice,” following protests over the arrest of its imam, Mohammed Ishaq Kindo, who had criticized a proposed law concerning religious freedoms.<\/p>\n

The governor of the Kadiogo region, Abdoulaye Bassinga, issued a decree to close the mosque located in the commercial and administrative area of “Zaka” in the capital, justifying the move by citing “risks threatening public order.”<\/p>\n

The decision took effect immediately, with police tasked with enforcing it, according to the administrative order.<\/p>\n

The closure came days after tensions arose following the detention of the imam and Sunni preacher Mohammed Ishaq Kindo, known for his criticisms of certain policies of the ruling military authority in the country.<\/p>\n

A number of the imam’s supporters gathered outside the mosque to demand his release before security forces intervened to disperse the protesters.<\/p>\n

According to a security source, authorities detained around one hundred of the imam’s supporters and transported them to a camp belonging to the security forces for what the authorities described as “civil and civic training.”<\/p>\n

Preacher Mohammed Ishaq Kindo had recently criticized a proposed law aimed at tightening oversight of religious freedoms in Burkina Faso, at a time when the country is experiencing increasing political and security restrictions since the military council came to power.<\/p>\n

The current controversy centers around a bill approved by the Burkinabe cabinet on March 19, which aims to regulate the practice of religious rituals within public facilities, including government offices, hospitals, and military barracks.<\/p>\n

The proposal has sparked widespread anger, particularly among Sunni Muslims, who believe the law could restrict the freedom of employees and citizens to perform prayers within official institutions.<\/p>\n

Preacher Mohammed Ishaq Kindo is considered one of the most prominent voices opposing the bill, having strongly criticized it in circulated video clips, where he argued that banning prayer within public facilities represents an infringement on the freedom of worship.<\/p>\n

Additionally, in the first official stance from Islamic institutions, the Union of Islamic Associations in Burkina Faso issued a statement confirming that Imam Dr. Mohammed Ishaq Kindo was detained on Tuesday afternoon, noting that the reasons for the arrest had not been officially communicated to the union at the time of the statement.<\/p>\n

The union stated that it immediately began communicating with the relevant authorities to obtain accurate information and work towards a “positive resolution” of the issue, urging Muslims to remain calm and exercise restraint and to avoid spreading unverified information.<\/p>\n

It also called on officials of Islamic coordination bodies in various regions to educate citizens on the importance of respecting state institutions and maintaining social peace.<\/p>\n

The detention of preacher Kindo follows weeks after the arrest of another imam in the city of Bobo Dioulasso named Mahmoud Barro under similar circumstances, and it was previously reported that activist Mohamedi Bagouyan died after being detained by police in March.<\/p>\n

These incidents have raised increasing concerns within the country about the widening tensions between authorities and some religious voices and activists, especially given the sensitivity of the issue of religious freedoms in a country facing complex security challenges related to combating armed groups.<\/p>\n

In the absence of a detailed official clarification from the government regarding the reasons for the detention of Imam Mohammed Ishaq Kindo, calls continue within Islamic and political circles to contain the crisis and prevent it from escalating further.<\/p>\n
