This step follows the approval of the final feasibility study report for the project by the three countries and the endorsement to proceed to the implementation phase.

The launch ceremony was presided over by Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines Mohamed Arkab, Nigerian Minister of State for Petroleum Resources in charge of Gas Ibe Kachikwu, and Niger’s Minister of Petroleum Mahamadou Tini. They were joined by the Governor of Adrar, Doyfi Fadhel, the CEO of Sonatrach, the Algerian state-owned company, Nourredine Daoudi, as well as officials from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and the Nigerien National Petroleum Company, alongside experts from the three countries.

According to a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Energy, the launch of the works came after the fifth ministerial meeting of the steering committee for the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline project in the capital of Algeria, which concluded with a joint endorsement of the final feasibility study report conducted by the consulting firm “PENSPEN,” and the adoption of its technical and economic recommendations.

On Wednesday, Algeria, Nigeria, and Niger announced the approval of the final plan for the implementation of the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline project and agreed to commence the practical procedures related to the construction phase.

The three ministers agreed to adopt the final feasibility study report as the technical and economic reference for the upcoming phases, in addition to completing the necessary arrangements for implementation and continuing coordination among the national companies responsible for overseeing the project.

The ministers emphasized that the transition to the construction phase represents a new step in the implementation of the project, which is considered one of the largest energy infrastructure projects on the African continent.

The Trans-Saharan gas pipeline project aims to transport natural gas from Nigeria through Niger to Algeria, and from there to regional and international markets, relying on existing transportation networks and processing and export facilities in Algeria.

According to official data, the annual capacity of the pipeline will range between 20 and 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

The Algerian section of the project will also accommodate future quantities coming from Nigeria via Niger, in addition to transporting additional quantities of gas produced in Algeria, especially from current and new gas basins, including the Ahnet basin.

The Algerian Ministry of Energy stated that the project will contribute to enhancing transportation, gathering, and export capacities, and optimizing the gas resources of the three countries.

Algerian Minister Mohamed Arkab reaffirmed his country’s commitment to continue implementing the project and supporting its various phases, noting that the project is part of efforts to enhance African cooperation and economic partnerships among the continent’s countries.

For his part, Nigerian Minister of State for Petroleum Resources in charge of Gas Ibe Kachikwu stated that Nigeria is committed to moving forward with the project, emphasizing Nigeria’s readiness to do what is necessary to ensure its success.

He added that the project holds economic significance for the three countries, both in terms of developing the energy sector and supporting investment and employment opportunities.

Niger’s Minister of Petroleum Mahamadou Tini confirmed that the project represents one of the most prominent trilateral cooperation projects between Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria, indicating that its impacts will extend beyond the participating countries to encompass the African continent.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced during the visit of Nigerian President Abdurrahman Tiani to Algeria in February 2026 the agreement to expedite the implementation procedures for the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline project and to commence its construction through Nigerien territory.

At the end of March, Sonatrach dispatched a technical team to Niger to initiate the practical procedures related to the project and monitor the stages of field implementation.

The Trans-Saharan gas pipeline project extends over a total distance of 4,130 kilometers, including 1,037 km within Nigerian territory, 841 km within Nigerien territory, and 2,310 km within Algeria.

The pipeline will connect gas fields in Nigeria to the Algerian network for transporting natural gas, allowing for the direction of supplies towards consumption and export centers through Algerian infrastructure.

The project is among the largest energy initiatives included in the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) goals and is part of programs to enhance economic integration and cross-border infrastructure on the continent.

The Trans-Saharan gas pipeline project dates back to the 1990s, before witnessing a series of meetings and agreements in recent years aimed at accelerating its implementation.

In February 2025, the three countries signed new agreements to expedite the project and complete the necessary technical and economic studies and arrangements, culminating in the adoption of the final feasibility study during the fifth ministerial meeting held in Algeria and the official launch of works on the Algerian section of the project.

With the project entering the implementation phase, Algeria, Nigeria, and Niger have transitioned from the stages of studies and technical coordination to the field execution phase, according to the program adopted by the joint steering committee for the project.

Find more news and
