statement, the truck had departed from the town of Telhandak in northern Mali but veered off its designated route before breaking down in a remote desert area far from main supply roads.

The statement clarified that the driver and passengers attempted for several days to repair the vehicle and resume their journey, but all efforts failed as their available water supplies gradually diminished.

As the truck remained inoperable and they could not obtain new supplies, the passengers found themselves stranded in an open desert area, where high temperatures and lack of water led to the deaths of dozens.

Authorities noted that rescue teams found the victims’ bodies around and beneath the truck after reaching the accident site.

According to local authorities, only two individuals survived the incident after managing to leave the truck site and walk long distances through the desert.

They explained that the survivors walked more than 50 kilometers on foot until they reached a water source, before continuing their journey to Asamakka to inform the authorities of what had happened.

Upon receiving the report, Agadez authorities dispatched rescue teams to the area, supported by elements of the Nigerien army, to reach the vehicle site and recover the victims.

The teams involved in the operation also buried the deceased in mass graves in the area due to the difficulty of transporting the bodies and the long distance separating the site from populated areas.

During the return of the rescue teams from the accident site, they found another truck stranded in the desert with more than 60 individuals on board.

Authorities stated in a subsequent report that the passengers of the second truck had been stranded for three days due to a battery failure, located more than 60 kilometers from Asamakka.

They added that the truck had departed from the town of Harouba in Mali, situated over 300 kilometers from the Niger border.

Rescue teams provided the passengers with water and essential supplies and assisted in repairing the vehicle, allowing them to resume their journey and leave the area safely.

Asamakka is located in the far north of Niger near the Algerian border and is one of the main crossing points in the Sahara Desert.

The area is frequently used by travelers, traders, and migrants coming from West African countries and serves as a key station on routes leading to North Africa.

The region is characterized by harsh natural conditions, with vast desert areas lacking water sources and essential services, making any mechanical breakdowns or deviations from known paths a direct threat to travelers’ lives.

These desert routes frequently witness incidents related to thirst, hunger, and vehicle breakdowns, especially during periods of high temperatures.

The northern desert of Niger is one of the most important migration and transit corridors in the Sahel and West Africa, but it has seen similar incidents in recent years that have claimed dozens of lives.

In 2013, 92 migrants from Niger died of thirst near the Algerian border after their vehicles broke down, leaving them abandoned in the desert by smugglers.

Non-governmental organizations have documented at least 35 migrant deaths in the Niger Desert during 2025 due to thirst or incidents related to travel conditions in remote desert areas.

The Asamakka area continuously receives migrants and travelers arriving after long journeys through the desert, many of whom suffer from exhaustion, dehydration, and injuries resulting from long walks in harsh climatic conditions.

Furthermore, Agadez authorities confirmed that the incident reflects the risks associated with traveling through remote desert areas, emphasizing their ongoing efforts to investigate the circumstances of the incident and provide assistance to travelers stranded on desert roads.

They also urged caution when traveling in border and desert areas, especially during periods of extreme heat, and to ensure the availability of water, fuel, and means of communication before embarking on long journeys through the desert.

Find more news and analyses on Africa on the Africa Press website

Africa-Press.
