Africa-Press. <\/strong> <\/span>Kenya has contracted with a local source and a local source to arrange financing for the expansion of Nairobi’s main airport, which has a cost of $1.2 billion, according to the Kenyan transport minister.<\/p>\n

The East African nation aims to increase the annual capacity of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to nearly three times, reaching 22 million passengers. However, it had to suspend the project last year after canceling an agreement with an Indian group in 2024, following criminal allegations against its founder in the United States.<\/p>\n

The transport minister stated in a statement that “the project aims to rely on the revenues generated from the airport to provide financing, while the two organizing entities will work to attract development finance institutions and commercial banks to participate in the funding.”<\/p>\n

He added that the maximum cost of the project will reach 154.2 billion Kenyan shillings (approximately $1.19 billion), and construction is expected to take three years.<\/p>\n

The minister noted that the international competitive bidding process for the project has already been completed, without disclosing the winning entity.<\/p>\n

Local and international media had reported that a Chinese company won the contract to implement the project, but the minister did not address these reports.<\/p>\n

The Chinese company already has a significant presence in Kenya, having participated in several major projects, including the development of railway lines, the construction of a stadium with a capacity of 60,000 spectators, major road projects, and a conference center.<\/p>\n

The Nairobi airport expansion project includes rehabilitating existing airport facilities, including runways and aircraft parking areas, as well as constructing a new passenger terminal, which will raise the annual capacity from 7.5 million passengers to 22 million.<\/p>\n

Kenya seeks to maintain its status as a regional air transport hub at a time when both Ethiopia and Rwanda are investing billions of dollars in building new airports to attract airlines and travelers.<\/p>\n

The Kenyan government is also looking for new ways to finance infrastructure projects amid the pressures imposed by the significant increase in public debt on its financial situation.<\/p>\n

The airport expansion comes at a time when major economies in East Africa are competing to establish themselves as the primary aviation gateway in the region.<\/p>\n

Updating Jomo Kenyatta International Airport has become increasingly urgent amid the continuous growth in passenger traffic and the expansion of the capacities of regional competitors.<\/p>\n
