Africa-Press. <\/strong> <\/span>The launch of the third general population and housing census in Chad (RGPH-3), which began on June 20 and will last for 21 days, has sparked political debate after the opposition expressed concerns about the government’s decision to conduct the process during the rainy season. They believe this timing could affect the comprehensiveness and accuracy of the census, while authorities assert that they have taken all necessary measures to ensure its success.<\/p>\n

The National Rally of Democratic Chadians (RNDT-Le Re\u0301veil) criticized the timing of the census, noting that heavy rains and floods hinder access to several areas, which may lead to the exclusion of some populations from the counting process, potentially impacting the credibility of the final results.<\/p>\n

Clement Sianka, the party’s secretary, stated that the party has received field reports indicating that census teams are facing significant mobility challenges. He explained that some workers are forced to use vehicles to cross areas flooded with water, while others are trying to reach population centers under what he described as extremely difficult conditions.<\/p>\n

He added that these challenges do not allow for the registration of all citizens, pointing out that some areas have yet to receive the necessary equipment for conducting the census, which heightens concerns about completing the process comprehensively.<\/p>\n

Chadian authorities rejected these concerns, affirming that the rainy season represents a manageable challenge and that the bodies overseeing the census have made arrangements to ensure work continues despite the weather conditions.<\/p>\n

The general coordinator of the census, Professor Madjigoto Robert, explained that the staff assigned to the process were selected from the areas in which they work, giving them a good understanding of the terrain and how to adapt to the rainy season conditions. He added that each staff member is responsible for a specific area and addresses the field realities based on the number of households present.<\/p>\n

To monitor the progress of the operation, the national committee overseeing the census held a meeting at the end of the week, chaired by the Minister of State Tahir Hamid Nguilin, where they reviewed the main logistical challenges facing field teams, including a shortage of printers, communication chips, and communication staff in some areas.<\/p>\n

The committee decided to extend the census period by an additional eleven days, making the new deadline for completing the process July 21, with the aim of compensating for the time lost due to field difficulties and ensuring access to as many residents as possible across the country.<\/p>\n
