Africa-Press. <\/strong> <\/span>At least 14 people were killed and several others injured in an attack by armed individuals on a village in Benue State, central Nigeria, amid ongoing violence related to land and resource disputes in the region.<\/p>\n

The head of the Otukpo local council, Maxwell Ogheri, stated that the attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, targeting the Ifeiye\u0301 village in the area. He noted that the assailants killed 14 villagers and injured others.<\/p>\n

Ogheri accused armed individuals from the Fulani herders of carrying out the attack, explaining that they stormed the village without warning, and that neighboring areas have experienced similar incidents in recent days. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and previous accusations against the Fulani associations regarding earlier attacks have been denied.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Benue State Police, Odime Idet, announced the deployment of security personnel to the affected area and the initiation of an investigation into the attack, without providing further details about the identity of the perpetrators or the number of injured. Benue State is one of the main hotspots of violence between farmers and herders in Nigeria’s middle belt, where clashes and retaliatory attacks in recent years have resulted in hundreds of deaths and the displacement of large numbers of villagers.<\/p>\n

The clashes are linked to competition over agricultural land, water resources, and grazing routes, with farmers accusing herders of destroying crops, while herders accuse local communities of targeting their livestock and preventing them from accessing grazing areas.<\/p>\n

Economic disputes intersect with ethnic and religious divisions, as many Fulani herders come from predominantly Muslim northern regions, while the majority of farming communities in Benue belong to predominantly Christian groups. However, the direct causes of the violence are primarily related to land and resource disputes and a lack of security presence.<\/p>\n

Benue State lies within the middle belt region separating northern and southern Nigeria and is considered one of the country’s key agricultural areas. In recent years, the state has witnessed repeated attacks on villages, coinciding with the expansion of grazing routes and a decline in arable and grazing land, amid calls for the Nigerian government to enhance security forces’ presence and hold perpetrators accountable.<\/p>\n
