Africa-Press. <\/strong> <\/span>The Somali military announced on Saturday evening that the Turkish Navy, in collaboration with the Somali Armed Forces, successfully liberated the cargo ship MV LATUF, which was hijacked by pirates on August 17 off the coast of Puntland.<\/p>\n

In a statement, it was clarified that during the operation, which lasted 10 days, four boats used by the pirates were destroyed, and 14 pirates were killed. The continuous pressure from the forces ultimately forced the pirates to abandon the ship.<\/p>\n

Full control over the cargo ship was confirmed, and it was stated that the ship resumed its journey safely.<\/p>\n

The operation was conducted under a defense cooperation agreement between the Federal Republic of Somalia and the Republic of Turkey, which enhances bilateral cooperation in protecting the Somali coast, ensuring maritime security, and combating piracy, according to the statement.<\/p>\n

The Somali military emphasized that acts of piracy are “serious crimes that carry severe penalties,” warning those involved, as well as anyone who supports or condones such actions, that they will be held accountable and brought to justice.<\/p>\n

The statement praised the Somali and Turkish forces for their cooperation in executing this important operation, reaffirming their commitment to protecting Somalia’s shores and territorial waters, combating piracy, and ensuring the safety of maritime navigation.<\/p>\n

The circumstances surrounding the ship’s liberation were not immediately clear, as it comes amid a resurgence of piracy off the coast of Somalia and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, where it has been reported that several commercial vessels have been targeted along the Somali coast in recent months.<\/p>\n

This coincides with a warning from the Danish Shipping Association about the renewed activity of piracy off the Somali coast, noting the return of attacks, the evolution of pirate tactics, and the ongoing security challenges facing maritime navigation in the region.<\/p>\n

Data from the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) recorded 13 piracy-related incidents in the Gulf of Aden, the Red Sea, and off the Somali coast during the first seven months of this year.<\/p>\n

The IMB recorded 8 incidents off the Somali coast in 2024, 5 incidents in 2025, before the number rose to 13 incidents during the first seven months of 2026.<\/p>\n

Despite this, the level of activity remains lower than the piracy wave experienced in the region between 2009 and 2011, when more than 200 attacks were recorded annually.<\/p>\n

The Danish Shipping Association believes that the resurgence of piracy may be linked to several challenges within Somalia, including drought, illegal fishing, economic difficulties, and weak government structures.<\/p>\n

It also pointed out that changes in the maritime security environment in the region, including increasing pressures on international maritime operations and anti-piracy efforts in the Horn of Africa, may have contributed to creating more favorable conditions for the return of piracy activities.<\/p>\n

The modus operandi of Somali pirates relies on hijacking vulnerable ships, particularly fishing vessels, to later use them to carry out attacks further from the coast.<\/p>\n

The European Union’s naval mission “Atalanta” estimates that several groups of pirates are active in the region, showing an increasing capability to conduct coordinated operations.<\/p>\n

Pirate activities are also adapting to weather conditions and monsoon winds, allowing them to exploit opportunities in the Gulf of Aden and the Somali Basin.<\/p>\n

These developments indicate an expansion of pirate operations and the emergence of a security situation that is increasingly approaching pre-2012 levels.<\/p>\n
