Africa-Press. <\/strong> <\/span>The Algerian Ministry of Defense announced the deployment of four Sukhoi-30 fighter jets to the Nigerien capital, Niamey, in response to a request from Nigerien authorities. Algeria stated that this move is part of strengthening strategic and military cooperation between the two countries and supporting the Nigerien army in facing any attempts to destabilize the country, following recent developments in the capital.<\/p>\n

Experts believe that this step is particularly significant given the nature of Algeria’s military doctrine, which has been based since independence on the principle of non-intervention outside its borders and focusing on defending Algerian territory. However, recent years have seen increasing debate about the ability of this doctrine to address the rapidly changing security dynamics in the Sahel region.<\/p>\n

The deployment of the four fighter jets was not Algeria’s first military move towards Niger in recent times, as it was preceded by the sending of four helicopters along with quantities of ammunition, indicating a rising level of military and security coordination between the two countries following the resumption of bilateral relations.<\/p>\n

These developments carry broader implications for Algeria’s military doctrine. Traditionally, the Algerian constitution restricted the sending of military forces abroad, but amendments made in 2020 opened the possibility for Algerian forces to participate in missions related to peacekeeping outside the country, under specific conditions and with parliamentary approval.<\/p>\n

The Sukhoi Su-30MKA fighters are among the key components of the Algerian Air Force, which Algeria acquired through several successive deals with Russia as part of a long-term program to modernize its fleet and enhance its capabilities in air superiority, ground attack, and long-range operations.<\/p>\n

The story began in 2006 when Algeria signed a contract with Russia to acquire 28 Su-30MKA fighters as part of a large Russian arms package. The MKA version is a variant specifically developed for Algeria, based on the Su-30 family, incorporating a range of Russian and foreign electronic equipment and flight systems.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, after Algeria returned a number of MiG-29SMT fighters to Russia due to disputes over their condition and equipment, part of them was compensated through a new deal that included 16 additional Su-30MKA fighters, raising the total Algerian orders to about 44 aircraft.<\/p>\n

In 2015, Algeria continued to enhance its fleet of this type by ordering 14 additional fighters, bringing the total to approximately 58 aircraft according to announced contracts and information available in open sources.<\/p>\n

Later reports indicated a new Algerian request for an additional 16 Su-30 fighters as part of a Russian arms package, confirming Algeria’s continued reliance on this family of heavy fighters.<\/p>\n

The Su-30MKA is characterized as a heavy, twin-engine, multi-role fighter with a long range and the capability to carry a wide array of missiles and bombs, in addition to its ability to perform air superiority, interception, and strikes against ground and naval targets.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the Algerian version has received advanced electronic equipment, including radar systems and electronic warfare systems, benefiting from some foreign technologies, making it one of the most advanced variants of the Su-30 family.<\/p>\n
