Africa-Press – Eritrea. Keren, 29 September 2023 – Over 400 patients had cataract eye surgery in the Keren hospital between September 18 and September 25 in collaboration with the Albeser Ophthalmologists team and Eritrean specialists.
According to the report, ocular diagnostics were performed on 2,000 patients, of whom 419 individuals underwent eye surgery, including 8 children.
The beneficiaries of the program, according to Mr. Kahsai Seium, head of eye medication, were patients from the nine sub-zones of the region who were found through the village health coordinators.
Mr. Kahsai also noted the importance of the program in preventing blindness.
Additionally, Mr. Kahsai stated that each patient who underwent eye surgery received eyeglasses.
Mr. Aelm Zekarias, director of national blindness control at the Ministry of Health, said that cataract is increasingly the leading cause of blindness and praised the work of the Albeser Ophthalmologists team.
Dr. Mohammed Hussein, the team’s medical director, said that this is the third time the team has performed eye surgery in Keren and expressed gratitude for the assistance they had received from the hospital’s management and eye specialists.
