Africa-Press – Eritrea. Asmara, 02 July 2024 – Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay, riding for the Belgian Intermarché-Wanty team, has made a historic mark in the cycling world by finishing first in the third stage of the Tour de France yesterday July 1.

This victory is unprecedented in the history of Eritrean and African cycling, as well as for his team, Intermarché. It marks a significant milestone in the 111-year history of the Tour de France.

Biniam became the first black African to win a stage in the Tour de France, completing the 230.8 km race in an impressive 5 hours, 26 minutes, and 48 seconds. In a thrilling final sprint, Biniam achieved a speed of 63.3 kilometers per hour, overtaking renowned sprinters such as Fernando Gaviria and Mads Pedersen, and crossed the finish line with his arms triumphantly raised.

Following this victory and the points earned in yesterday’s intermediate sprint, Biniam has risen to second place in the sprint classification with a total of 83 points. Biniam’s remarkable achievement in his second Tour de France appearance has garnered acclaim from media, cycling enthusiasts, and analysts alike.
