Africa-Press – Eritrea. The investigation into the tragic death of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva has taken a new turn, as two eyewitnesses have come forward to dispute the official version released by Spanish authorities.
According to the Guardia Civil, the fatal crash on a Spanish highway was caused by excessive speeding, with the Portuguese international reportedly behind the wheel. However, José Azevedo and José Aleixo Duarte, both truck drivers who witnessed the scene, have cast serious doubt on that conclusion.
José Azevedo, who filmed the burning vehicle shortly after the crash, insists the car was not speeding. “I filmed, I stopped, but there was nothing I could do,” he told Marca. “The family has my word: they weren’t driving fast. I drive this road every day and I’ve seen many reckless drivers, but they weren’t among them. They were calm.” His account is echoed by Duarte, who told Correio da Manhã that the car was moving at a “moderate speed” and pointed to the dangerous state of the A-52 highway as a contributing factor.
These revelations add new complexity to a case that is already drawing emotional reactions from the public. The causes of Jota’s accident will likely remain a topic of debate for some time, especially as Portuguese authorities have already pointed to the poor condition of the A-52 highway, where Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva were traveling. Reports also indicate that other serious accidents have occurred recently on that same stretch of road.
