Africa-Press – Eritrea. China on Tuesday completed the construction of the world’s first wind-powered underwater data center (UDC) project in east China’s Shanghai Municipality.

The UDC project is located in the Lin-gang Special Area of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, and possesses a total power capacity of 24 megawatts, the state-run Xinhua News reported.

It has received an investment of 1.6 billion yuan (about $226 million), according to the Lin-gang Special Area administrative committee.

Unlike traditional land-based data centers, this project is designed to operate on over 95% green electricity, cutting energy consumption by 22.8%, and reducing water and land consumption by 100% and over 90%, respectively.

According to the administrative committee, the project’s completion represents a major milestone in the combined development of UDC and offshore renewable energy.

It serves as a model for the green and low-carbon evolution of computing infrastructure, as well as for utilizing offshore wind power locally.
