Broos Hints Mofokeng may Miss AFCON 2025 Squad

Africa-Press – Eritrea. Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has hinted that Orlando Pirates winger Relebohile Mofokeng might not make South Africa’s final squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with the Belgian tactician admitting that the youngster’s place is far from guaranteed.

The 21-year-old has shown flashes of brilliance for Pirates this season but has struggled to maintain the form that earned him national team attention earlier in the year. With the continental showpiece approaching, Broos appears to be leaning toward more consistent performers.

“I think for now, 75% or 80% of the squad I know — it’s already in my head — and then the rest we will see what happens in the next month,” Broos told the media.

“I think before 8 December, I will announce the final squad for the trip to AFCON,” he continued. “Some decisions, when you see the squad now and you see who is not there; [Relebohile] Mofokeng is not there now, [Siyabonga] Ngezana is not there, and a few others are not there.”

Broos stressed that competition for places is fierce, with several fringe players pushing to impress before the final list is submitted.

“It’s my job, and it will be difficult on some occasions to choose between A and B, then choices have to be made, and we will do it,” he added. “It was easier two years ago when we were going to AFCON in Ivory Coast; I didn’t have those problems.”

With less than a month before the announcement, Mofokeng faces a race against time to rediscover his form and convince Broos he deserves a seat on the plane to Morocco.
