CAF APPROVES NEW SQUAD RULES FOR 2025 AFCON

Africa-Press – Eritrea. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has introduced a significant adjustment to squad regulations ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a move that is expected to influence team preparations — including that of the Super Eagles.

Under the revised rule, national teams can now register up to 27 players for major tournaments.

However, CAF will only cater for the travel, accommodation, and logistical expenses of 23 players, leaving the additional four players to be funded by their respective football federations.

CAF explained that the expanded list gives coaches more flexibility to manage injuries, suspensions, and tactical changes, especially with the tight match schedules anticipated for the Morocco-hosted championship.

NIGERIA SET TO RELEASE PROVISIONAL SQUAD

With the 2025 AFCON slated for December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is expected to unveil the Super Eagles’ provisional squad in the coming days.

The team’s official X handle on Tuesday heightened anticipation, posting:

“Super Eagles Africa Cup of Nations preliminary squad announcement coming up.”

According to reports, head coach Eric Chelle has already submitted a 55-man provisional list to the NFF.

The squad will be pruned before the team reconvenes for its pre-tournament training camp, with several fresh faces tipped to be included as Chelle looks to refresh the squad.

The Super Eagles’ camp is scheduled to open on Monday, December 8, with a series of friendly matches being arranged to fine-tune preparations.

OTHERS RELEASE SQUADS AS BUILD-UP BEGINS

South Africa became one of the latest nations to make their intentions known, releasing a 54-man provisional squad on Monday as teams across the continent step up their build-up to the tournament.

GROUP C FIXTURES AND KEY MATCHES

Nigeria will compete in Group C, which also features Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania.

The Super Eagles open their AFCON campaign on December 23, 2025, against Tanzania at the Complexe Sportif de Fès in Fès.

On the same day, Tunisia will battle Uganda at the Stade Annexe of Prince Moulay, Rabat.

The standout fixture of the group comes on December 27, when Nigeria face Tunisia in Fès — a match many believe could decide the group’s leadership. Uganda and Tanzania will clash simultaneously in Rabat.

The group stage concludes on December 31, with Nigeria meeting Uganda in Fès, while Tunisia take on Tanzania in Rabat in the final round of matches.

NIGERIA CHASING FOURTH CONTINENTAL CROWN

The Super Eagles enter the competition determined to go one step further after finishing as runners-up at the last AFCON, losing 2–1 to hosts Ivory Coast in the final. Nigeria, three-time African champions, last won the title in 1980, 1994, and 2013.

With CAF’s new squad regulation reshaping team strategies and a competitive Group C awaiting, the stage is set for a compelling AFCON campaign — and Nigeria’s quest for a fourth continental title continues with renewed intensity.
