Africa-Press – Eritrea. Turkey has reaffirmed commitment to bolster relations with African countries, insisting her interest in the continent is sincere, long-term and based on a win-win principle.

Opening the Turkey-Africa Media Summit, which kicked off on Wednesday in Istanbul, Turkish Communications Director Fahrettin Altun said he hopes the summit will strengthen the long existing ties between Turkey and African countries.

Prof Altun noted that the Turkey-Africa relations have gained momentum in the past 20 years, and are based on mutual gains.

“Turkey’s interest toward the African continent is based on “equality and mutual gain,” he remarked, recalling that Turkey joined the African Union as an observer in 2005 and participated in and organized many summits, including the latest Turkey-Africa Partnership Summit in Istanbul in December, last year.

He added that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has so far paid 50 visits to 30 African countries in an effort to cement existing bilateral relations and establish new partnerships.

“Turkey’s ability to see itself as a true partner with African states, to express this thought and to find a response to these feelings from our African friends directly stems from the absence of colonialism in our history,” he told participants from 45 countries who are attending the two-day summit.

He underscored the need to fight disinformation in the media, calling on the media to publish reliable information for sustainable development of their nations.

He expressed Turkey’ desire to build strong cooperation with all African countries in the fight against disinformation, by promoting responsible journalism.
