World hunger and malnutrition levels worsened dramatically last year, with most of the increase likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a multi-agency United Nations (UN) report published on Monday.<\/p>\n

The number of undernourished people rose to about 768 million \u2013 equivalent to 10 percent of the world\u2019s population and an increase of about 118 million versus 2019, said the report published by UN agencies, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the World Health Organisation (WHO).<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, the pandemic continues to expose weaknesses in our food systems, which threaten the lives and livelihoods of people around the world. No region of the world has been spared,\u201d the heads of the five UN agencies wrote in this year\u2019s Foreword, warning of a \u201ccritical juncture\u201d.<\/p>\n

While more than half of all undernourished people (418 million) live in Asia, Africa represented the biggest jump in cases \u2013 more than double that of any other region \u2013 at 21 percent of the population. More than a third of the continent\u2019s population \u2013 282 million \u2013 is estimated to be undernourished, the report said.<\/p>\n

Of the victims, children remain the ones who pay the highest price, the report continued, with more than 149 million less than the age of five estimated to be afflicted with stunted growth.<\/p>\n

The UN sustainable development goal<\/b><\/p>\n

The report, the first comprehensive assessment of food insecurity and nutrition since the pandemic emerged in December 2019, said that hunger was spreading around the world even before the pandemic, with other major causes of food insecurity being conflict, economic recessions, and climate extremes.<\/p>\n

The 2021 edition of \u201cThe State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World\u201d estimated that on current trends, the UN sustainable development goal of zero hunger by 2030 will be missed by a margin of nearly 660 million people.<\/p>\n

That number is 30 million higher than in a scenario where the pandemic had not occurred.<\/p>\n

Saskia D\u2019Pear, the head of systems analysis for nutrition with the World Food Programme, told Al Jazeera from The Hague it was harder than ever to get aid to reach people in need.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are aiming to reach 138 million with immediate food assistance and we are continuing our work with governments to improve the situation for the longer term for many more people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are facing drivers of this situation which is conflict, economic downturn from COVID and climate change,\u201d she said, adding that the work has become even harder with the decreased budget for assistance due to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it is even harder to meet all the needs especially as they are increasing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur worst fears are coming true. Reversing such high levels of chronic hunger will take years if not decades,\u201d said WFP chief economist Arif Husain.<\/p>\n

The recommendations<\/b><\/p>\n

The report recommended policymakers undertake a number of actions to prevent undernourishment, such as incorporating humanitarian, development and peace-building policies in conflict areas; strengthening the resilience of the most vulnerable to economic adversity; and tackling poverty and structural inequalities.<\/p>\n

After declining for several decades, food insecurity has been on the rise since the mid-2010s, especially in countries affected by conflict, climate extremes, economic downturns, or battling high inequality.<\/p>\n
