Africa-Press – Eritrea. <\/strong><\/span>Australia has sent a legal notice to Twitter, demanding an explanation about what the social media giant is doing to prevent an \u201calready inexcusably high\u201d level of online abuse.<\/p>\n

Julie Inman Grant, Australia\u2019s eSafety commissioner, said in a statement that research conducted by her institution found \u201cnearly 1 in 5 Australians have experienced some form of online hate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis level of online abuse is already inexcusably high,\u201d Grant said.<\/p>\n

The notice released to the public by Grant urges Twitter to explain how it was \u201cenforcing its hateful conduct policy\u201d and \u201chow many of the accounts previously banned for hate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHate has been a weapon used for centuries to devastating effect, attacking people on the basis of race, belief or identity,\u201d Grant said, adding: \u201cWhat is new is the proliferation of online channels by which hate can go viral.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOnline invective can be launched like a ballistic missile, hitting its designated mark and disseminating its toxin to millions of people in an instant,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Calling it \u201cone of the greatest gifts,\u201d Grant, however, acknowledged that social media has \u201cgiven voice to those who previously had none, serving as a great leveler and allowing anyone to speak truth to power.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crediting Twitter for its \u201cspontaneous, open and viral nature,\u201d she said: \u201cI once believed that no other platform held such promise of delivering true equality of thought and free expression.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having worked with Twitter in 2014 following the \u201cremarkable Arab Spring transformation,\u201d sometimes referred to in the Middle East as the \u201cTwitter Revolution,\u201d Grant said she was \u201cso convinced of the company\u2019s potential for positive social change.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, she said Twitter today was \u201cfailing to confront the dark reality that the platform is increasingly being used as a vehicle for disseminating online hate and abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re already aware of reports that the reinstatement of some of these previously banned accounts has emboldened extreme polarizers and peddlers of outrage and hate, including Australian neo-Nazis,” Grant added.<\/p>\n

Australia’s eSafety has given Twitter 28 days to comply with the “please explain” notice, or face heavy fines every day it misses the deadline, according to ABC News.<\/p>\n
