Africa-Press – Eritrea. <\/strong><\/span>Newcastle winger Harvey Barnes has had a scan on a \u201csubstantial\u201d foot injury and could be out for \u201cmonths rather than weeks\u201d, says boss Eddie Howe.<\/p>\n

The 25-year-old limped off after 12 minutes of Sunday\u2019s 8-0 thrashing of Sheffield United.<\/p>\n

Barnes, signed from Leicester in July for \u00a338m, has had a scan and is waiting to see if surgery is required.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an injury to a part of the foot just below the toe. I think it\u2019s quite a substantial injury,\u201d Howe said. \u201cI won\u2019t go too technical because I\u2019m not qualified to do so but yes it\u2019s a very unusual injury.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barnes, who has one England cap, has made seven appearances for Newcastle, scoring once.<\/p>\n

Howe, whose side face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, added: \u201cHe was down after the game because he knew it wasn\u2019t a normal injury where you feel a muscle and think that might be one or two weeks. This was a slightly more complex issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, tests have shown Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice did not suffer a serious back injury during Sunday\u2019s 2-2 draw with Tottenham.<\/p>\n

The England international, who has started every league game this season, was substituted at half-time.<\/p>\n

After the game, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said Rice had \u201cdiscomfort in his back\u201d and hoped it was not long-term.<\/p>\n

Rice, a \u00a3100m summer signing, was not expected to be in Arsenal\u2019s Carabao Cup squad to face Brentford on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

But the 24-year-old could be in contention for their Premier League match against Bournemouth on Saturday. Arsenal are fifth in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Manchester City.<\/p>\n
