Africa-Press – Eritrea. <\/strong><\/span>Mendefera, March 6, 2024 \u2013 The Southern Region\u2019s committee dedicated to the protection of children\u2019s rights and the prevention of harmful practices conducted its annual activity assessment for the year 2023 on 2 March in Mendefera.<\/p>\n

Mr. Kaleab Tesfaselasie, the Director General of Social Services in the region, emphasized the critical role of safeguarding children\u2019s rights and eradicating harmful practices in fostering national development. He urged the sub-committees across various sub-zones to collaborate effectively with their partners to achieve these goals.<\/p>\n

A comprehensive report presented during the meeting highlighted that issues such as underage marriages and female genital mutilation are currently not significant concerns at the regional level. However, the report stressed the need for ongoing surveillance and monitoring, particularly in the region\u2019s more remote areas, to ensure these harmful practices remain under control.<\/p>\n

The committee secretaries advocated for stronger involvement from parents and teachers in combating harmful practices. They also called for providing due attention to the traditional medical practices.<\/p>\n

Established in 2018, the committee for the protection of children\u2019s rights and the prevention of harmful practices in the Southern Region was initiated by the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare. This initiative was supported by collaborations with the Ministry of Health and the National Union of Eritrean Women branches in the region, demonstrating a united front in the safeguarding of children\u2019s welfare within the region.<\/p>\n
