Africa-Press – Eritrea. <\/strong><\/span>Massawa, 21 March 2024 \u2013<\/b> The town of Afabet vibrantly commemorated the 36th anniversary of the demise of Nadew Iz and the liberation of Afabet on 19 March, marking the occasion with great patriotic enthusiasm.<\/p>\n

The commemoration was distinguished by military and public parades, along with placards that celebrated the heroic feat demonstrated during the offensive. The event also featured a variety of cultural and artistic programs, adding to the solemnity and festivity of the occasion.<\/p>\n

Prominent attendees included Ms. Asmeret Abraha, Governor of the Northern Red Sea Region, Mr. Rezene Adonai, Secretary of the PFDJ in the region, Army Commanders, and numerous residents of Afabet.<\/p>\n

Mr. Ahmed Mohammed-Nur Rejib, Administrator of the Afabet sub-zone, remarked on the significance of this year\u2019s anniversary, highlighting that it comes at a time when the Eritrean people have secured national sovereignty, stability, and unity, and are deeply engaged in national development initiatives.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the event, Ms. Asmeret Abraha reflected on the historical impact of Nadew Iz\u2019s fall 36 years ago. She emphasized how this pivotal moment boosted the morale of the Eritrean people, hastened the decline of the colonizing force, and signaled the imminent full independence of the country.<\/p>\n

It is noteworthy that the Eritrean People\u2019s Liberation Front (EPLF) executed a swift offensive from 17-19 March 1988 at the Nakfa Front, during which the Derg\u2019s formidable Nadew Command, consisting of 20,000 soldiers and equipped with sophisticated military hardware, was decisively annihilated.<\/p>\n
