However, it has rejected the idea of limiting the discussion to the topic of xenophobia, emphasizing the need to address the root causes of migration and the economic and security challenges facing the continent.

This stance from South Africa comes as the Ghanaian government announced the resumption of evacuation operations for its citizens from South Africa, following ongoing violence related to xenophobia. Accra had already repatriated some of its nationals before announcing, in a statement issued on Sunday, July 26, the launch of a new phase of evacuation that includes one thousand citizens.

Amid a wave of mass displacement of tens of thousands of foreigners fleeing violence, Ghanaian President John Mahama renewed his call for the African Union to include the issue of xenophobia in South Africa on its agenda.

During a press conference held on Sunday, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, affirmed his support for dialogue within the African Union on migration. However, he stressed that the discussion should not devolve into a blame game or political targeting of South Africa.

Lamola clarified that the dialogue should focus on the real causes of migration, including weak economic growth, high unemployment rates, and governance, peace, and security issues that drive citizens to leave their countries. He pointed out that solely blaming South Africa will not contribute to finding sustainable solutions.

He added that limiting the discussion to accusations of South Africa’s xenophobia or anti-African sentiment without addressing deeper factors will not lead to a resolution of the crisis, calling for a comprehensive and constructive approach to tackle the phenomenon at the continental level.

Concerns have increased in several African countries after violence against foreigners in South Africa resulted in at least four deaths in recent months, prompting several governments to take measures to evacuate their nationals.

Economically, the waves of foreign departures have raised fears of labor shortages, particularly in the agricultural sector, where many farmers rely on foreign labor. This has led sector representatives to warn of the implications of these developments on production.

In this context, Mamoloko Kubayi, chairperson of the joint ministerial committee on migration established by President Cyril Ramaphosa last month, announced the formation of a task force to assess the economic impacts of the departure of foreigners following the violence.

She explained that the committee has tasked ministers of trade, industry, agriculture, and tourism with preparing a comprehensive study within two weeks, in coordination with economic sectors and business owners, to measure the impact of these developments on various economic activities, not just through the numbers of those leaving.

Additionally, the committee will also review tourism sector data to determine whether recent events have affected the number of incoming tourists to the country, noting that the study will assess the crisis’s implications on gross domestic product and economic performance during a period described as fraught with challenges.

Find more news and analyses on Eritrea on the Africa Press website

Africa-Press – Eritrea.
