Africa-Press – Eswatini. While Royal Leopard were within reach of CAF riches, the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) also missed out on approximately E250 000 following the side’s elimination from the Total Energies CAF Confederation Cup on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Total Energies CAF inter-club competitions, in particular the CAF Confederation Cup, member associations receive an additional equivalent share of five per cent for each amount awarded to clubs. Leopard were within a touching distance of a historic second CAF Confederation Cup group stages appearance on the trot and have now missed out on USD275 000 (approximately E5 043 500) in prize money.

The police ensemble has been eliminated from the second-tier CAF club competition by Mali’s AS Real de Bamako after suffering a crippling 3-1 defeat at the 50 000-seater Stade 16 Mars.

The tie finished 4-2 on aggregate following last Wednesday’s 1-1 draw in the first leg clash played at the Somhlolo National Stadium. The defending MTN Premier League champions took an early lead, four minutes into the game through Senzelwe ‘Vardy’ Dlamini but the bright start was deemed by a spirited Real Bamako. The Malian side has now qualified for the group stages of the continent’s second tier club competition.

EFA Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe said he was not in a position to comment about money that does not belong to the association.

“This money was never guaranteed to the association and any money that comes from CAF is reflected on the financials and reported to the EFA congress. I really cannot comment about that money because the federation did not receive it last season when Leopard reached the group stages of the very same tournament,” Radebe said.
