Hub giants Manzini Wanderers recorded their first point of the season when they shared the spoils after a two –all draw with Manzini Sea Birds in the Manzini derby at Prince of Wales Ground yesterday.
Wanderers were the better side for large quantities of the first half with former Moneni Pirates striker Fabrice Mopina missing two consecutive crosses from Phathizwe Mabuza. Mabuza was too good on the right delivering balls inside the box. Moments later Mopina eventually scored the opener 15 minutes into the game.
Mabuza then hit the ball straight into Sea Birds goalkeeper Bafana Ngwenya’s hands and Mopina scored from the rebound. Sea Birds’ Gcinizwi Dlamini defended well to stop what looked like a clear chance for the Terisayi Changara-led side in the 19th minute. Wanderers continued pressing hard even in the final third of the first half, holding on to the lead at half time with the score at 1-0.
Sea Birds leveled matters in the 66th minute through captain Muzi Tsabedze who equalised with a header from Mthokozisi Gwebu’s free kick. The Christian Thwala led side came back and took full control of the game as Tsabedze doubled the tally and made it 2-1 in the 77th minute with a clinical finish.
After extending the lead, it was all Sea Birds’ show as they continued attacking Wanderers hard. Former Tinyosi winger Njabulo ‘Koko’ Gama delivered a cross to ensure winger Phathizwe Mabuza finished it off to make it two-all. That proved to be the last bit of action of the day as the match ended with Wanderers collecting their first points after six matches.
