REFEREES BACK IN ACTION

Africa-Press – Eswatini. It’sall systems go for the resumption of the MTN Premier League action tomorrow following a fruitful meeting held between football stakeholders and referees.

The whistle men met with the Eswatini Football Association and Premier League of Eswatini yesterday at Sigwaca House, where they ironed out their differences with football authorities. This emanated from the alleged possible boycott of matches by referees due to safety concerns and a 30 per cent increase in match allowances.

Eswatini Referees Association Secretary Mbongeni Shongwe confirmed the successful meeting.

“Today we had a successful meeting with all the stakeholders, where we tried to address some of the concerns. Members of the public must be assured that we are back in the field and ready to render our service.

I must clarify that we hadn’t boycotted matches as it was said before,” he said. Adding, Shongwe said they would wait for responses from stakeholders concerning their concerns.

Meanwhile, independent investigations suggest that top flight football referees are the lowest paid in the COSAFA region as they get E350 per match.

There were also escalating scenes of violence against these officials in recent games. The latest incident was during the derby between Mbabane Highlanders and Swallows, where referees were held hostage for more than three hours by Swallows fans.
