(Aggregate 2-2, Leopard advance on away goal rule)
MAJESTIC Royal Leopard have rewritten the country’s history books.
The police side has become the second Eswatini side to reach the CAF Confederation Cup group stages despite their 1-2 loss to JS Kabylie last night in Algeria (on an away goal rule).
‘Ingwemabalabala’ have joined Mbabane Swallows in the list of local clubs that have reached the group stages of the continent’s second premier club competition.
Mbabane Swallows achieved the same feat in 2018.
The MTN Premier League defending champions needed a first half goal from their skilful playmaker Junior Magagula to send the North African side packing in the competition.
This was after they won the first leg encounter by 1-0 at Mavuso Sports Centre.
The home side scored early in the third minute through Yacouba Doumbia to take the lead but Magagula equalised for Leopard in the 16th minute.
JS Kabylie were awarded a penalty in the 88th minute to make it 2-1 through Hodeifa Arfi.
police
The match ended 2-1 in favour of JS Kabylie but the away goal rule sees the police side through.
Leopard will join Group B, which also includes Orlando Pirates (South Africa), JS Saoura (Algeria) and Al Ittihad (Libya).
The Edwin Matsebula-led side will open their group stages campaign against Al Ittihad on Sunday, possibly at Mavuso Sports Centre before taking on Orlando Pirates and JS Saoura from Algeria.
Leopard are now E4.1 million richer after reaching the crucial round.
