Africa-Press – Eswatini. All civil servants who are currently hired temporarily will be confirmed as permanent by 2025. That is if the words of Minister of Public Service Mabulala Maseko are anything to go by.

The minister committed during the debate of the Budget Speech at the House of Assembly. He was speaking specifically on the wage bill which is set to increase by E900 million in the next financial year as alluded to by the Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg.

Minister Maseko began his submission by recounting how the hiring freeze had affected several government ministries and departments.

He said during the sitting of the different Parliament committees, the Ministry of Public Service had become a laughingstock as most of the departments decried posts that had not been filled, which affected their operations and overall service delivery.

“We have started a process of converting some temporary posts to permanent ones. In the next financial year, about half of the existing number of temporary teachers will be permanent and earning better wages. In the financial year 2024/2025, all the temporary teachers will be permanent. The issue of temporary teachers will be a thing of the past,” he said.

Worth noting is that early last month, the Ministry of Public Service was called upon to employ 5 000 teachers permanently. This was one of the demands made by the Swaziland National Association of Teachers in a petition they delivered to the ministry.

The petition stated that government should stop hiring teachers on a contract basis while soldiers, police officers, and warders were hired permanently.
