Africa-Press – Eswatini. DEPUTY Prime Minister (DPM) Themba Masuku has left the country for Russia to represent His Majesty King Mswati III at the Russia-Africa Summit.
The DPM left the country through the Ngwenya Border Post yesterday afternoon. Masuku explained that he had been delegated to represent the King at the summit to be held from July 27-28 at St Petersburg.
Expected
He said the meeting was expected to discuss a number of issues, including that of food security, international security, technology, climate change and rekindling relations with Africa.
“Other issues will include human rights and welfare issues; hence we will be joined by the minister of justice as part of the delegation because the issues border on her ministry. I will also greatly benefit from the deliberations because social welfare issues are with my office,” he said.
Masuku stated that they had also been invited to attend the Navy Day celebration to take place soon after the summit.
He said the delegates would witness how the navy operated in that country.
The summit is expected to convene at least 40 African heads of State and government.
It will focus on deepening cooperation between Moscow and African capitals across five broad areas: politics, security, economic relations, science and technology and cultural and humanitarian engagement.
It is stated that this ambitious agenda includes a parallel Economic and Humanitarian Forum intended to ‘diversify the scope and nature of Russian-African cooperation, in turn setting the course of its long-term development.’
Masuku stated that before going to Russia, they would attend the United Nations Food Systems Summit +2 Stocktaking Moment to be held in Rome, Italy where he would also be representing His Majesty King Mswati III.
He explained thus summit would take place from July 24-26.
Meeting
He said the meeting would be held at the premises of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations.
The summit will be hosted by Italy, in collaboration with the Rome-based UN Agencies (FAO, IFAD and WFP), the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub and the wider UN system.
Masuku said His Majesty delegated him to attend this important summit which would discuss a number of issues around the food supply and production within the food chain.
He said the meeting would also be attended by representatives from the ministry of agriculture as well as tourism and environmental affairs.
The vision of the organisation is to stimulate and support action for SDGs-based food systems transformations towards the acceleration of the 2030 Agenda.
Its mission is to serve countries through systemic, country-driven, customised support in translating their commitments into effective actions to reach sustainable food systems by 2030, leveraging the wider UN system’s capacities.
