Africa-Press – Eswatini. FORMER Lobamba Lomdzala Member of Parliament (MP) Marwick Khumalo is set to break a record held by the late former Siphofaneni MP Gundwane Gamedze.
Khumalo will break this record provided he gets elected back to Parliament to become an MP for Lobamba Lomdzala Constituency. He will have to wait for September 29 to know his fate.
Khumalo was victorious during the primary elections that were held on Saturday at Mahlanya. He amassed a total of 814 votes and his runner-up, Angel Thandeka Mavuso got 544 votes.
He will now have to face primary elections winners from other chiefdoms within Lobamba Lomdzala.
Khumalo can only break Gamedze’s record if he can represent Lobamba Lomdzala Constituency from this year up until 2028.
In his first 10 years as a legislator, Khumalo represented Lobamba Constituency.
He then changed camps in 2008, where he started representing Lobamba Lomdzala, where he has spent the last 15 years as a representative.
Gamedze passed away in January after succumbing to a short illness.
He had served as an MP for four consecutive terms under Siphofaneni Constituency, having started in this capacity in1998 up until 2018.
In 2018, he was succeeded by Mduduzi Simelane, who fled the country and was succeeded by his wife Nomalungelo last year. In February, Khumalo described Gamedze as the longest serving MP this country has ever produced.
He said this during a memorial service of the late former Siphofaneni legislator.
Khumalo emphasised that Gamedze was the longest serving MP coming from the same constituency.
Khumalo said he had a special relationship with Gamedze after they had worked on an issue involving people who were supposed to be compensated by government at Siphofaneni.
