Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini received a whopping 2 000 metric tons of rice from World Vision Taiwan, worth over US$2.4 million, about E45 million, in a bold show of friendship aimed at fighting hunger across the kingdom.
The handover, held at the NDMA Warehouse in Matsapha, saw Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla officially receive the donation from Taiwan’s Ambassador to Eswatini, His Excellency Jeremy Liang. The event also kicked off the latest phase of the national food assistance programme, expected to benefit more than 262 000 vulnerable citizens across all 59 constituencies.
DPM Dladla did not mince her words as she expressed deep gratitude to the government of Taiwan, describing the donation as a beacon of solidarity, compassion and shared humanity. She said the rice had come at just the right time, as many families across the country continued to feel the sting of food insecurity.
“This act of kindness is not merely a gesture of goodwill,” she said. “It proves the depth and authenticity of the relationship between Taiwan and Eswatini. It is in moments of difficulty that true allies reveal themselves.”
The DPM also revealed that the government of Eswatini had chipped in to make the mission a reality, contributing E6.8 million to support the transportation of the rice from Taiwan. This made up nearly half of the total shipping cost, which stood at E15.1 million.
She further acknowledged World Vision Eswatini for stepping up in a big way, contributing E5.6 million to cover local operations. These included transporting the rice within the country, distribution to various communities, monitoring, reporting and all the other logistics needed to keep the wheels turning.
Ambassador Liang, clearly touched by the gesture of unity, said the donation was more than just rice in a bag.
“This rice is a symbol of Taiwan’s love for Eswatini,” he said. “Food aid is a lifeline for the vulnerable, it curbs hunger and provides the strength needed. It is our determination to stand with our friends in times of need.”
Other speakers at the event included NDMA CEO Victor Mahlalela, who applauded the smooth coordination between government, international partners and non-governmental organisations. World Vision National Director Tinah Mukunda also gave her word that the rice would be delivered right to the homes that needed it most.
Yesterday’s event proved that when nations stand together, real change happens. In this case, Taiwan showed that solidarity can be packed in a sack and delivered with love.
