Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini is on the brink of achieving a milestone in rural electrification, ensuring that every household in the country has access to electricity.
Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg shared this optimistic news today, noting that two World Bank loans and a USD10 million grant are being utilised for this final push.
“This last phase is the hardest, but also the most rewarding,” Rijkenberg said.
“We are targeting the last 12% of homes, many of which are in remote and difficult-to-reach areas. The funding, totalling $100 million, ensures that even if families cannot afford electricity, there will still be a ready board installed in their homes.”
Eswatini’s electrification journey has been long but impressive. In 2003, only 5% of homesteads had access to electricity. Thanks to support from development partners such as Taiwan and persistent government efforts, the figure stands at 88% today.
“This final push is crucial because electricity is more than light—it’s about economic empowerment, education, and improved livelihoods,” said the Minister.
The project’s completion is expected to unlock new opportunities in rural areas, from small businesses to better learning environments for children.
Moreover, the concessional terms of these loans underscore Eswatini’s responsible borrowing strategy.
“For every dollar we borrow under the concessional window, we repay just a dollar in 30 years,” Rijkenberg explained. “It’s an incredibly favourable arrangement that ensures sustainability.”
With this initiative, Eswatini is set to become a shining example in the region, proving that no home should be left behind in the quest for development. As the Minister highlighted, “Every Emaswati deserves the dignity and opportunity that electricity brings. It’s an investment in our people and our future.”
