Africa-Press – Eswatini. It looks like Eswatini’s education sector is becoming more accessible by the day, as schools are now being built with people with disabilities in mind.
This was said by Sibusiso Khanya, who works as an inspector for special needs education in the Ministry of Education and Training. Khanya said this in Nhlangano on June 25, 2025 when they were sensitising educators based in the Shiselweni Region on how they could continue to ensure accessibility to quality education for people with special needs.
Khanya said what was good was that schools also built ramps for pupils who were on wheelchairs so that they could be able to access buildings which would otherwise be difficult to access. She said the workshops were helpful to the educators because they were going to enable them to make the environment conducive for pupils with disabilities to learn.
This will also prevent the pupils from dropping out of school as a result of the difficulties they could face when in school. Khanya said universal designs were now adhered to by schools during construction of new blocks of classrooms.
The United Nations estimates that there are less than 50 percent schools in this world that are able to provide conducive education to pupils with disabilities.
The UN promotes inclusive education for children with disabilities through various mechanisms, including the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).
This convention mandates that countries ensure an inclusive education system at all levels, enabling children with disabilities to learn and participate fully in society. The UN also emphasises the importance of providing necessary support within the general education system to facilitate effective learning for all children.
