Africa-Press – Eswatini. Strengthening local production and consumption is central to Eswatini’s economic transformation, reducing imports, creating jobs, and boosting GDP growth, said Henrik Franklin, UNDP Resident Representative, at the Unlock Made in Eswatini event held at UN House.
“Made in Eswatini is more than just a label, it is a movement for national pride, prosperity, and innovation. Every certified product reflects the resilience, creativity, and determination of our local entrepreneurs,” Franklin said, highlighting the cultural and economic value of supporting homegrown goods.
Earlier this year, Franklin participated in the 2025 Eswatini Consumer Awards at Brackenhill, witnessing firsthand the country’s vibrant entrepreneurial spirit. UNDP partners with the movement to accelerate MSME development, unlock market access, and ensure inclusive growth.
“Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises are the backbone of job creation, youth empowerment, and economic resilience. Our approach is to move the country from accidental entrepreneurship to sustainable, growth-oriented enterprises that are resilient, competitive, and future-ready,” Franklin explained.
Key UNDP interventions include:
Eswatini Youth Empowerment Programme (EYEP): Provides starter kits, artisanal and technical training, digital upskilling, and graduate placements to equip young people for entrepreneurship and work.
MSME Registry Portal: Developed with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade and CEEC, this digital platform maps, profiles, and connects local businesses, enabling data-driven policymaking, targeted support, and improved access to finance and markets.
CREATE Project: Supported by the EU, helps MSMEs adopt renewable energy solutions, reduce operational costs, and develop green business models.
INGELO Local Certification Scheme: Guides MSMEs to meet quality and safety benchmarks, reducing compliance costs and preparing businesses for regional trade under the AfCFTA.
“These initiatives create jobs for youth, strengthen women-led enterprises, and expand local production, boosting GDP, tax revenue, and reducing import dependency,” Franklin said.
He concluded with a rallying call: “Buy local, support local, grow local. Made in Eswatini is a promise that prosperity, resilience, and innovation can be built here at home. With initiatives like INGELO, we are equipping our entrepreneurs to compete, thrive, and transform the future of Eswatini’s economy.”
