Africa-Press – Eswatini. Somnjalose High School has officially introduced traditional attire as part of its school uniform to promote patriotism and cultural pride among learners.
The announcement was made on Friday, November 7, 2025 during the launch ceremony held at the school, attended by the Minister of Education and Training, Hon. Owen Nxumalo, and Principal Secretary (PS) Nanikie Mnisi.
Headteacher Macandza Mamba said students will begin wearing the lihiya every Friday starting next year, noting that the initiative was fully supported by both parents and teachers. He explained that the cost of the lihiya has been included in school fees to ensure all students can afford it, adding that the school plans to introduce the sidvwashi next year. “Our goal is to preserve our identity as EmaSwati and help students appreciate their roots from a young age,” Mamba said.
The introduction of traditional attire in schools comes at a time when many fear the erosion of cultural values due to modernization. The school wanted to play its part in keeping Eswatini’s culture alive while maintaining discipline and unity among learners.
Minister Nxumalo applauded the school for leading by example, describing the move as a sign of patriotism and respect for national identity. When schools embrace culture, they help strengthen our sense of belonging as a nation.
He also promised to assist Somnjalose High School in addressing some of its infrastructure challenges, including acquiring land and constructing teachers’ houses. Nxumalo reiterated his commitment to improving teachers’ welfare, saying he aims to end the practice of employing them on a contract basis.The event featured traditional performances by students, highlighting the value of merging education with cultural preservation.
