UNESWA STUDENT’S FILM STEALS SPOTLIGHT AT WORLD TV DAY 2025

Africa-Press – Eswatini. A gripping student short film titled “All for Nothing” captivated audiences during the 2025 World Television Day celebrations at the University of Eswatini (UNESWA).

The production, created by Journalism and Mass Communication students, was screened on November 20, 2025, drawing widespread praise for its emotional depth and powerful social message.

The event brought together several leading figures in Eswatini’s media and communications sector, including UNESWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Justice Tfwala; Principal Secretary Macanjana Motsa, representing the Minister of Information, Communications and Technology Hon. Savvanah Maziya; Eswatini TV CEO Mlamuli Dlamini; Channel Yemaswati CEO Qhawe Mamba; and ESCCOM Chief Executive Fikile Gama. Students, lecturers, and industry stakeholders packed the venue to commemorate World TV Day, which recognizes the global impact of television in shaping public opinion, informing societies, and fostering international understanding. The 2025 theme emphasized “Artificial Intelligence in Television,” highlighting how AI is transforming content creation and broadcasting.

In the midst of keynote speeches and discussions, the film “All for Nothing” emerged as one of the most memorable highlights of the day. Introduced by student filmmaker Sethu Qaba, the production was created on a zero budget, relying entirely on teamwork and creativity. Qaba shared that the film’s primary goal was to raise awareness about the dangers of gambling, particularly among students who may be vulnerable to addiction.

The film tells the story of a young university student who begins gambling after experiencing several early wins. What initially feels exciting quickly devolves into a destructive habit. As the character loses more money, she becomes overwhelmed by depression, emotional strain, and a significant decline in her academic performance. The storyline mirrors real experiences many young people face and served as a strong cautionary message for attendees.

The film received enthusiastic applause from the audience, with media professionals commending the students for their courage, storytelling skill, and dedication to addressing real-life social challenges. Eswatini TV CEO Mlamuli Dlamini was particularly impressed, praising the students for their outstanding creativity and their ability to use film as a tool for education and change.

“All for Nothing” stood out as a testament to what young filmmakers can achieve with passion and purpose. Its success during the World TV Day celebration not only showcased the emerging talent within UNESWA but also underscored the critical role students play in promoting awareness and sparking conversations on issues affecting today’s youth.
