Africa-Press – Eswatini. Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini has provided clarity on the status of the Government Spokesperson position, assuring the nation that the process of appointing a new official is actively underway following recent developments surrounding the former office holder.
Speaking during the 2025/2026 performance debate in Parliament, the PM was responding to concerns raised by Senator Dr Stukie Motsa regarding the delay in filling the position. He outlined a detailed sequence of events, beginning with the retirement of former Government Spokesperson Alpheus Nxumalo and the subsequent efforts to secure a replacement through the relevant civil service structures.
The PM explained that upon assuming office, he found that Nxumalo had continued to execute his duties effectively and perfectly, ensuring continuity in government communication. However, he retired in 2025.
Following Nxumalo’s retirement, government then explored the possibility of identifying a new candidate, partly driven by the need to create employment opportunities within the public service amid rising unemployment.
However, during this process, it emerged that the Civil Service Commission (CSC) had already taken a decision to re-engage Nxumalo and extend his contract, a move that temporarily maintained stability within the office. This arrangement was later overtaken by events when Nxumalo was arrested and charged with a sensitive offence.
“In light of the nature of the charges, it would have been improper for him to continue serving at the Prime Minister’s Office or represent the country,” Dlamini stated, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the integrity and credibility of government institutions.
Consequently, government resolved not to proceed with signing the renewal of his contract and instead requested the Civil Service Commission to submit a new candidate for consideration. The PM confirmed that this process is currently ongoing, with a clear focus on identifying a suitable and credible individual to assume the role.
The Government Spokesperson position remains a critical link between the state and the public, tasked with communicating national programmes, policies and decisions in a transparent and timely manner. Over the years, Nxumalo had established himself as a key voice in this space, contributing to public awareness and engagement on government matters.
The PM’s update reflects a balanced approach that recognises past contributions while prioritising accountability and ethical leadership in public office. By reopening the recruitment process, government is creating an opportunity to appoint a new spokesperson who will strengthen communication, enhance public trust, and support Eswatini’s ongoing development agenda.
As the selection process progresses, the nation looks forward to the appointment of a new Government Spokesperson who will continue to amplify the country’s voice with professionalism, clarity and integrity.
Thabile Mdluli is the acting Government Spokesperson and has held the positing since 2025 when Nxumalo left office.
