Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini is entering a transformative phase in its healthcare sector, with renewed focus on strengthening collaboration between public and private stakeholders to deliver quality, accessible, and resilient health services for all citizens.

Speaking at the 3rd Annual Health Symposium hosted by the Clinic Group at Happy Valley Hotel, the Ministry of Health emphasized the strategic importance of rethinking Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to meet evolving healthcare demands. The remarks were delivered on behalf of Minister of Health Mduduzi Matsebula by Director of Health Services, Dr. Velephi Nhlengetfwa Okello.

The symposium, themed “Rethinking Public and Private Healthcare Partnerships in Eswatini,” comes at a pivotal time as global healthcare financing shifts and countries seek more resilient systems capable of withstanding future shocks. Eswatini is positioning itself proactively to adapt and thrive within this changing landscape.

Strengthening Collaboration for Better Outcomes

The Ministry highlighted that PPPs are long-term collaborations designed to finance, build, and operate healthcare services while ensuring efficiency, quality, and expanded access. These partnerships combine public sector oversight with private sector expertise and investment—accelerating progress in the health sector.

Eswatini has already seen tangible success through collaborations with international partners such as the United States, Taiwan, MSF, and various UN agencies. These partnerships have significantly improved service delivery, infrastructure, and disease-specific interventions across the country.

A standout achievement is the renal dialysis partnership with Fresenius Medical Care, which ran from 2015 to 2025. The initiative successfully expanded access to life-saving dialysis services, strengthened local capacity, and raised awareness about renal health—ultimately ensuring that emaSwati could access essential treatment affordably and sustainably.

Real Benefits for Citizens

Through these partnerships, Eswatini’s health sector has achieved:

– Improved healthcare infrastructure aligned with international standards

– Enhanced knowledge-sharing between public and private medical professionals

– Introduction of advanced medical services previously unavailable locally

– Increased access to cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment technologies

– Reduced patient waiting times for critical procedures

Addressing Challenges with Innovation

While acknowledging challenges such as contract management complexities and financial pressures, the Ministry expressed confidence in ongoing reforms. New PPP guidelines are being finalized to ensure stronger governance, better risk-sharing, and improved value for money.

Importantly, Eswatini is shifting its approach—moving beyond infrastructure-focused partnerships toward innovative, technology-driven models that prioritize patient outcomes, equity, and social impact.

There is also a deliberate pivot toward strengthening primary healthcare and preventive services at community level, ensuring that healthcare reaches citizens where it is needed most.

A Vision for Growth and Opportunity

Looking ahead, PPPs are expected to play a dual role in improving health outcomes and contributing to economic growth. Future initiatives may include:

– Development of specialized hospitals with medical tourism potential

– Revitalization of underutilized public health facilities

– Expansion of critical services such as emergency care, blood banks, and laboratory systems

United for a Healthier Nation

The Ministry concluded by commending the strong collaboration between public and private sectors, noting that shared commitment remains the driving force behind progress.

With continued partnership, strategic reform, and innovation, Eswatini is building a healthcare system that is not only resilient but inclusive—ensuring that every citizen has access to quality care, regardless of circumstance.

The momentum is clear: Eswatini is not just rethinking healthcare partnerships, it is redefining them for a healthier, stronger future.
