Eswatini Reports Progress in TB Fight at Conference

Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini has reported significant progress in its fight against tuberculosis (TB) during the ongoing National TB Conference on March 27, 2026, with new data highlighting improvements in reducing infections and strengthening treatment outcomes.

The conference has brought together health experts, policymakers, and regional stakeholders to assess progress and explore strategies aimed at ending TB in the country. Discussions have focused on enhancing prevention measures, improving access to treatment, and strengthening surveillance systems to better respond to the disease.

A key presentation by Dr Barry Kistnasamy from South Africa’s National Department of Health highlighted ongoing efforts to address TB in the mining sector, which continues to affect many current and former miners in Eswatini. He emphasised that cross-border collaboration remains essential in tackling TB, particularly among populations exposed to high-risk working conditions.

The mining sector has long been associated with higher TB infection rates due to prolonged exposure to dust and confined environments. Addressing these conditions is critical in protecting vulnerable groups, including emaSwati miners and ex-miners who remain at risk of developing the disease.

Participants also reflected on Eswatini’s progress in implementing targeted interventions, noting that improved data systems and coordinated responses are contributing to better health outcomes. Stakeholders stressed the importance of sustained investment in healthcare services and community-based programmes to further reduce TB cases.

An upcoming panel discussion is expected to provide additional insights into practical solutions, focusing on strengthening partnerships, improving service delivery, and supporting affected communities.

The National TB Conference forms part of ongoing national and regional efforts to eliminate TB, with Eswatini positioning itself among countries making steady progress in combating the disease.
