UNION PAPERS OPENS OMEGA PLANT, SUSTAINS NEARLY 300 JOBS

Africa-Press – Eswatini. Union Papers has commissioned the Omega Waste Incineration Plant, strengthening waste management capacity while sustaining nearly 300 jobs for emaSwati and advancing industrial and environmental priorities.

The Minister for Commerce, Industry and Trade, Manqoba Khumalo, officiated the opening and toured the company’s operations, including its waste paper processing facility and industrial incinerator.

He said the development represents more than the launch of a new facility, but reflects a broader commitment to growing industry while addressing environmental challenges. “Union Papers stands as a strong example of what can be achieved when industry embraces innovation and sustainability,” Khumalo said.

Established in 2019, Union Papers has grown into the country’s largest waste processing company. The firm processes about 120 tons of waste paper daily and converts it into 100 tons of Kraft paper, achieving a recovery rate of 87%.

Khumalo commended the company’s investment in modern waste management systems, including plastic waste processing and the new incineration plant, which has a capacity of 500 kilograms per hour and is designed for the safe disposal of hazardous and biomedical waste.

“This is the circular economy in action, where waste is transformed into value, contributing both to economic growth and environmental protection,” he said.

The company’s transition to 100% biomass energy, eliminating coal from its operations, was highlighted as a significant step toward cleaner industrial production and a benchmark for green transformation.

The newly launched Omega Waste Management division is expected to play a key role in safeguarding public health, protecting the environment, and supporting the healthcare sector through the safe disposal of hazardous materials.

Union Papers employs nearly 300 emaSwati, with government noting its contribution to job creation and skills development within the industrial sector. Government reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable industrialisation and private sector led growth, encouraging further investment in environmentally responsible practices.

Khumalo officially declared the plant open and congratulated Union Papers on what he described as an important milestone in the country’s industrial development.
