NKHABA – Nkhaba Chiefdom has taken an important step towards sustainable community development following the completion of its Chiefdom Development Plan (CDP), a strategic roadmap aimed at guiding growth and improving livelihoods within the area.

Before the plan was finalised, the Mbuluzi Ecosystems Restoration Project presented a draft version to residents of Nkhaba, allowing community members and traditional leaders to review the document and contribute valuable input.

The consultative process ensured that the voices of residents and the perspectives of traditional leadership were incorporated into the final plan, strengthening community ownership of the development agenda.

The engagement formed a key part of the participatory development process. During the discussions, residents had the opportunity to examine proposed strategies and highlight important issues affecting their communities. Their contributions helped shape decisions that will influence development priorities within the chiefdom.

Chiefdom Development Plans are developed under the Mbuluzi Ecosystems Restoration Project, an initiative designed to promote sustainable land management while supporting long-term community growth.

Through the programme, communities are encouraged to identify their own development needs and work collectively towards practical solutions that support social and economic progress.

The project is implemented by the Eswatini National Trust Commission with financial support from the Global Environment Facility. Technical support for the initiative is provided by the United Nations Environment Programme.

By actively involving residents and traditional leadership structures, the programme strengthens local governance while ensuring that development strategies reflect the real needs and aspirations of the people.

Officials involved in the process noted that community participation is essential in ensuring that development plans remain relevant and sustainable. When residents contribute to planning processes, they are more likely to support and participate in the successful implementation of projects.

The Nkhaba Chiefdom Development Plan will guide development activities in the area from 2025 to 2030. The plan focuses on promoting sustainable land management, protecting natural ecosystems and creating opportunities that can improve the socio-economic well-being of residents.

Community leaders expressed optimism that the plan will help drive coordinated development initiatives, strengthen environmental protection efforts and enhance economic opportunities for families living in the chiefdom.

With a clear vision now in place, Nkhaba Chiefdom is well positioned to pursue sustainable development while preserving its natural resources for future generations.
