Plight of Workers in Eswatini: Salary Increase Announced

Africa-Press – Eswatini. Phila Buthelezi, the Minister of Labour and Social Security has confirmed a Government Gazette allowing employers to pay pre-school workers two thousand Rands (R2,000.00) per-month, an amount equivalent to a full tank fuel for current cars allocated to Cabinet Ministers and senior Government officials.

Eswatini recently imposed a 13.61% increase in electricity tariff, pre-school workers might not afford the electricity increase, looming bus fares increase, escalating food prices, clothing and school fees for their children among other costs.

But the Labour and Social Security Minister announced a 9.2% increase for pre-school workers earning R2,000.00 and this means after the increase, they will earn two thousand, one hundred and eight-four Rands (R2,184.00).

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday in Mbabane, the Minister announced Wages increase for fifteen (15) industries including the media, Manufacturing and Processing, Textile, Forestry, Mining and Bull Vehicle Operators among others.

Worth-noting and despite the approved Government Gazettes, the standard of living in Eswatini remains low and Government contributed by approving low salaries.
