Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>The National Marketing and Agricultural Board (NAMBoard) has indicated that some farmers have opted to cease production due to the scarcity of fertilizer.<\/b><\/p>\n

This information was relayed by NAMBoard\u2019s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Bhekizwe Maziya, to the Minister of Agriculture Jabulani Mabuza during the Horticulture Innovative Platform held at Royal Villas last Friday.<\/p>\n

farmers attended the event where they discussed solutions on how they could tackle the shortage of fertiliser.<\/p>\n

Maziya said in the first quarter ending on June 31 they, have seen a 20 per cent increase in imports from the previous quarter ending on March 31.<\/p>\n

He said conversely when comparing export figures, they indicate a decline of about 54 per cent in the year ended March 31, 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a clear indication that the country is importing more food and exporting less products. Confirming the declined exports are the statistics on fresh produce for local production, which indicates a 34 per cent decrease in the year ended March 31, 2022 compared to the previous year,\u201d Maziya stated. He further explained that due to the scarcity of fertiliser accompanied by its excessively high costs, a number of farmers have resorted to rationing its application.<\/p>\n

Maziya said this was contrary to the recommended application rates which obviously resulted to reduced yields. \u201cSome farmers have opted to reduce their scale of production while others have sadly abandoned production completely,\u201d the chief executive officer said.<\/p>\n

He said as government agencies they have realised that this was a challenge beyond the farmers\u2019 abilities, and it has become a national crisis and requires concerted efforts by all industry players to find solutions.<\/p>\n

The chief executive officer said it was high time financial institutions were challenged, especially development financial institutions, to come to the party and introduce developmental financial products that were user-friendly to agriculture.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will never establish and commercialise new innovations in agriculture if we don\u2019t have longer term loans with favourable terms.<\/p>\n

\u201cInvestment in agribusiness is long- term in its nature, therefore it is setting up farmers for failure to fund such projects with short-term loans,\u201d Maziya said.<\/p>\n

He added that he knew banks and financial institutions would cite cost of funds as a barrier for this. He challenged them to also think outside the box and approach government with winning, farmer-focused proposals for possible capitalisation.<\/p>\n

Maziya said as NAMBoard, they were ready to collaborate with financial institutions willing to take up this challenge and see how they could de-risk those new products.<\/p>\n

ESWADE Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Samson Sithole, who also made his remarks, said most agricultural enterprises and horticultural companies in particular were now below break-even.<\/p>\n

He said productivity was low, produce quality was compromised and post-harvest losses were on the rise and therefore, there was an urgent need as a country to address the problems.<\/p>\n
