Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>As part of preparations to launch another project aimed at bringing about economic development through sustainable solutions in the country, Catalyze Eswatini toured the Vukani BoMake Manzini site last Friday.<\/b><\/p>\n

The Vukani BoMake project is a noble, pioneering and climate friendly initiative by Business Women Eswatini (BWE) \u2013 the women-wing of Business Eswatini (BE) – launched in 2020 in response to the alarming job losses which were a result of the closure of non-essential businesses after the enforcement of the lockdown in efforts to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

It is part of six recipients of the E500 000 worth grant intended for upscaling existing income-generating waste management projects, an initiative which Catalyze Eswatini is an implementing partner of on behalf of UNDP.<\/p>\n

Vukani BoMake is utilising the grant to set up a textile cottage factory in Manzini to benefit 44 women (some living with disabilities) as well as young people. Catalyze Eswatini Chief Executive Officer Debbie Cutting and officials from the non-governmental organisation toured the site to see progress as the launch is now only about three weeks away.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe initiative\u2019s main objective is improving livelihoods and resilience of individuals in waste management whilst strengthening sustainability of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises through the development of sustainable innovative waste management solutions in a circular economy,\u201d said Cutting.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo date, Vukani BoMake has made tremendous progress by providing practical hands-on technical training for the women and youth who will benefit from the project, and we are also quite impressed by the progress we have witnessed in preparations for the launch,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

\u201cCatalyze also supports the project through capacity-building of the women and youth by providing basic business management training and creating a sustainable business model.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is expected that the skills acquired from this intervention will sustain the business well into the future as they expand their product line and increase market segments,\u201d explained Zanele Mazibuko, Catalyze Eswatini\u2019s Senior Business Advisor.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, BWE Chairperson Tokky Hou disclosed that the cottage factory would have both women and the youth working in different groups, whereby they would receive waste fabric from textile factories and then create a range of garments and apparel. \u201cThis is the biggest cottage factory since the inception of the project and we simply cannot wait to officially unveil it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Hou also expressed appreciation to all partners who have contributed to the success of the project and further mentioned that she was \u2018super proud\u2019 of the beneficiaries\u2019 dedication and creativity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Manzini Municipality has been quite instrumental in bringing to life the vision of this site, so we appreciate the CEO and her wonderful team for their indefatigable efforts,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are now in our final stages leading to the launch, and I do not have much to say other than how grateful we are to all individuals and companies who have supported our vision.<\/p>\n

The dream is huge and we are taking it one step at a time,\u201d elucidated Hou. Partners who have supported the project in its various stages include the United Nations (UN) and mobile telecommunications giants MTN Eswatini through the MTN Foundation.<\/p>\n

Under the programme, women from different constituencies were provided with cottages factories, empowered with basic entrepreneurship skills, and further provided with sewing machines and cut-way material to make their products.<\/p>\n

The project has over the past two years developed to the point where it now has three wings; the rural women wing, the youth wing as well as the people living with disabilities (PLD) wing.<\/p>\n
