{"id":10285,"date":"2022-08-06T08:32:46","date_gmt":"2022-08-06T08:32:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/all-news\/plastic-pollution-birds-all-over-the-world-are-living-in-our-rubbish"},"modified":"2022-08-06T09:27:21","modified_gmt":"2022-08-06T09:27:21","slug":"plastic-pollution-birds-all-over-the-world-are-living-in-our-rubbish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/all-news\/plastic-pollution-birds-all-over-the-world-are-living-in-our-rubbish","title":{"rendered":"Plastic pollution: Birds all over the world are living in our rubbish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span><b>Birds from every continent except Antarctica have been photographed nesting or tangled in our rubbish.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Photos were submitted by people from all over the world to an online project called Birds and Debris.<\/p>\n<p>The scientists running the project say they see birds ensnared &#8211; or nesting &#8211; in everything from rope and fishing line to balloon ribbon and a flip-flop.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly a quarter of the photographs show birds nesting or entangled in disposable face masks.<\/p>\n<p>The focus of the project is on capturing the impact of waste &#8211; particularly plastic pollution &#8211; on the avian world.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"1100\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10277 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_1.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_1.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_1-266x300.jpg 266w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_1-909x1024.jpg 909w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_1-768x866.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Basically, if a bird builds a nest using long fibrous materials &#8211; like seaweed, branches or reeds &#8211; the chances are it will have human debris in its nest somewhere,&#8221; said Dr Alex Bond from the Natural History Museum in London, and one of the researchers involved.<\/p>\n<p>The project, which he and his colleagues have been running for four years, aims to draw attention to the widespread problem of plastic waste in the environment.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10278 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_2.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_2.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_2-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you start looking for this stuff, you&#8217;ll see it everywhere,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And this has really illustrated the huge geographic scope &#8211; we had reports from Japan , Australia, Sri Lanka, the UK, North America &#8211; it&#8217;s truly a global issue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a recent study, the team looked into how many of the photos being submitted feature pandemic-related personal protective equipment (PPE). They found that it featured in almost a quarter of the photographs submitted.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10279 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_3.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_3.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_3-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s almost all masks,&#8221; said Dr Bond. &#8220;And if you think of the different materials a surgical mask is made from &#8211; there&#8217;s the elastic that we see tangled around birds&#8217; legs or we might see birds injured by trying to ingest the fabric or the hard piece of plastic that secures it over your nose.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So we use this catch-all term of &#8216;plastic&#8217; but it&#8217;s a whole range of different polymers, and masks are a good example of that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"976\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10280 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_4.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_4.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_4-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_4-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_4-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The researchers say they want to highlight the &#8220;systemic problem&#8221; that leads to so much debris ending up in the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Lead researcher Justine Ammendolia from Dalhousie University in Canada told BBC News that seeing the breadth of the impact on species globally was &#8220;devastating&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In April of 2020, the first sighting of a bird hanging from a facemask in a tree was recorded from Canada and the sightings just internationally cascaded afterwards, &#8221; she said. &#8220;It really just demonstrates the harm that humans are capable of imposing on the environment in a very short window of time across the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10281 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_5.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_5.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_5-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_5-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Changing to a bamboo toothbrush or a canvas shopping bag is not going to save the world, [because] most large-scale plastic production today is commercial and industrial,&#8221; said Dr Bond.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So it&#8217;s a combination of top-down policies and bottom-up pressure for us to say &#8216;enough is enough&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10282 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_6.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_6.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_6-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/eswatini\/sites\/33\/2022\/08\/postMediaimg_23_6-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>PhD researcher Justine Ammendolia added: &#8220;For people seeing these images for the first time, it&#8217;s alright to feel sad.
