Africa-Press – Eswatini. <\/strong><\/span>Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) has engaged in a drive to promote intra-regional energy trading.<\/b><\/p>\n

This the company has done by hosting various stakeholders in a two day Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) Market Trading Platform (MTP) road show.<\/p>\n

The first day of the event was held at Emafini Country Lodge. Attendees were informed that the aim of the workshop was for members to be aware of the responsibilities of the SAPP in terms of coordinating the operations and running as well as particularly the electricity markets that are operating in the region.<\/p>\n

Participants were also informed that the workshop would assist in ensuring that there was an opportunity to share in the resources that the region was rich in as far as electricity generation was concerned. It was also a platform for countries that have surplus electricity to sell to other member states.<\/p>\n

EEC Managing Director Ernest Mkhonta said as an energy supplying entity in the country they had made means to increase the supply of electricity.<\/p>\n

He said they have just completed a feasibility study at Maguga and had seen a huge potential of increasing electricity supply by 30 megawatts. Mkhonta said this could happen in two stages with the first stage generating electricity to the tune of 10 megawatts.<\/p>\n

He said downstream they would also construct a dam which would hold enough water to generate electricity supply around 22 megawatts.<\/p>\n

Mkhonta said they were also looking at other means of generating electricity such as clean coal bio stations.<\/p>\n

The MD extended appreciation to neighbouring countries which have ensured continued supply of electricity in the country. He said this ensured, that even though Eswatini could generate its own electricity but in the event power stations had challenges the country would continued to have constant power supply.<\/p>\n

Mkhonta went on to highlight that EEC was looking to increase its energy supply internally first before they could sell to the outside market.<\/p>\n

Chairperson of the Renewable Energy Association Eswatini (REAESWA) Dr Constance van Zuydam said from the gathering she believed that she would be able to appreciate the opportunities that were available for the members of renewable energy association in the country.<\/p>\n

She said once they had that information they would be able to assist the country in raising and realising awareness on sustainable energy to everyone in the country from decision makers, industries down to the grassroots levels.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that as the presentations will be made we would get to appreciate where the members could be involved,\u201d the chairperson said.<\/p>\n

Hlobsile Hlophe from EEC said her expectations were to understand the marketing that SAPP initiates for EEC as a utility to be able to meet their base loads according to their different aspects.<\/p>\n
