The brunt of this political banditry is felt by simple working-class families and citizens, in true cowardly fashion, the aggressors have opted for the soft target of citizens and out of duty law enforcing officers.

These grieving families, wives, children, friends and parents would be very happy if their murdered relatives were in prison, so they could at least look forward to occasional visits where they could see the smiling faces of their relatives. Here is what we know with certainty, political banditry has never and will never enjoy popular support, whatever its motivation and justification. The Mozambican experience offers us really profound lessons that we urgently need to internalise, the country went through what is still described as the most brutal civil war in the history of the region. A Renamo driven campaign that was more focused in killings and the maiming of citizens than their declared adversary, the Frelimo government. The external influence/sponsorship from Zimbabwe and, after 1980, from South Africa are also indicative of the always embedded external manipulations that are almost inevitable in such situations. History has it on record that after all the bloodshed and destruction, still the Mozambican civil war never achieved the status of being classified as a popular uprising against a hated government.

The Rebels’ mode of operation

Promising to offer traditional leaders, who enjoyed little sympathy from the Marxists in Maputo, recognition and influence, the rebels took control of long stretches of rural Mozambique. Citizens under such zones were subjected to extortion/ citizens tax to raise funds for the rebels, failure to comply resulted in instant murder or cutting off body parts by the lower rung operatives known as Mujeeba. The destructive trail left by Renamo from 1980 to 1988 included – 1 800 schools, 720 clinics/hospitals, 900 shops, 1 300 trucks and buses; hundreds of thousands of lives were lost in the bloodshed and millions more as a result of a war-induced famine. This mayhem can be traced back to poor leadership, the inability of the leaders to present a vision that would inspire both combatants and the citizens, here is what the first president of Renamo, Andre Matsangaissa, said in a radio interview Voz da Africa Livre in relation to policies in 1979;

“We are not interested in policy-making …later we will have to work out policies but first communism must go from our country.’’

This is how Alex Vines characterised the Renamo leadership at the time;

“What unites Renamo is the desire for power. Renamo’s leadership core is derived of disgruntled or disillusioned Frelimo members who were unable progress enough for their ambitions within the party, or were not important enough to be protected from prosecution for their corrupt activities as the cases of Renamo presidents, Matsangaissa and Dhlakama illustrate. This is Renamo`s true ideology which continues to motivate its internal leadership’’

Sadly, these same kinds of motivations seem to be in full swing even here at home right now, those close to progressive activists speak of seeing only a desire to replace royalty with comrades, with very little tangible commitment to democratic rule.

In fact, the mode of operation assumed by local bandits does portend of a leadership culture that could plunge the country into utter darkness.

The violence is totally unjustifiable, the recent victory of the new Sphofaneni member of parliament attests to the fact that much political mileage can be obtained within our constitutional confines, this kind of on- the- ground activism is too daunting for most activists, opting instead for social media couch politics and violence. Our political differences are many and may even be deep, but none of them is of a magnitude that would justify violence. It’s a tragedy of serious proportions to have murderers walking freely in our streets, some even shamefully bragging about even more bloodshed.

We must mention that the total indifference to the pain and lose Renamo caused to the citizens of Mozambique did not go unpunished; the citizens ultimately did have their moment to judge the Rebels through their democratic vote, Mozambique has remained firmly in the hands of the ruling party since the first democratic elections ,effectively becoming an elected one-party-state.

These moments of sadness and irreplaceable lose, must make every citizen resolute in ensuring that those behind the violence and killings are made to account for their actions. It is an inalienable democratic right of every citizen to hold a political view of her/his choice without fear, and acts of intimidation, violence, and killings of opponents are barbaric. We know that violence is an easy, though inhuman, option for undemocratic demagogues who are thirsty for power for its own sake. In elections time the thinly cloaked/vailed threat issued by Renamo has always been;

“VOTE FOR RENAMO AND PEACE IS ASSURED’’

Carolyn Nordstrom made the following incisive point about violence; ‘’ Violence is about the destruction of culture and identity in a bid to control (crush) political will.’’

She further offers the following insight; ‘’Terror warfare is predicated on the assumption that if all the supports that make people`s lives meaningful are taken away from them ,they will be incapacitated by the ensuing disorder ; whether hapless victims or Hobbesian animals ,they will be shorn of political agency.’’

A national dialogue

The fundamental ethos of democracy is that nobody in a democracy gest everything he wants; citizens and organisations keen on a guanine national dialogue must accept this reality. Jostling for more bargaining power is legitimate if pursued through democratic channels, using violence to attain more bargaining power is political blackmail and totally draconian.

The national dialogue will offer conservatives a suitable platform to share their vision for the country and shed themselves of the tag of being merely reactionaries.

The country .in many years, is being tested to show a degree of political maturing it has not been exposed to in recent memory. Our fathers, who were part of the nationalistic pre-independence politics had better exposure and political credibility; they were far better equipped negotiators who never for a single moment contemplated violence.

Looking at the spate of killings, violence, intimidation, and insults, it’s really difficult to hope for a productive dialogue, the political atmosphere has been poisoned with so much hatred and bitterness.

The onus is on the few dignified individuals across the political spectrum to ensure a decent political discourse.

The shrewd F. W. de Klerk, former South African president, with his leadership were able to identity people they could work with within the liberation movement, and selectively engaged the likes for Mandela and others to reach a peaceful outcome.

The very strenuous transition period could easily have gone wrong, had the De Klerk left everything in the hands of the liberation movement leaders, radicals could have plunged the country into chaos.

Leaders that have demonstrated an inclination for violence and killings should suffer the fate of Dhlakama, to be condemned by the electorate to total obscurity.

We owe it to our children and future generations to ensure the country remains a modern, decent, democratic state offering every citizen the chance to led a decent, prosperous and safe life.

Armed bandits constitute the biggest threat to such a vision, and it is the obligation of every law-abiding citizen to help diffuse such a threat.

For More News And Analysis About Eswatini Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Eswatini.
